LC questions

My cat was wondering...
1 - why is it important to stir/agitate the inoculated LC medium?
2 - How important it breath-ability to a growing culture?
3 - are there any good ways to safely modify a typical 4-hole PF jar into a good LC container?

i can tell you i have done a baby bottle LC tek. no fresh air. sealed lid. mycelium grows great, but a lil smaller. i made a LC with fresh air exchange., and the myc. is growing in much larger chunks
and using RTV will work to fill those holes. drill 2 larger. insert straw or tyvex tubing. then fill one with polyfil, and the other with RTV. wamo!

stirring and agitating the mycelium is important to fragment the mycelial mat, which allows it to grow exponentially by creating more points of new growth, rather than what existed on the perimeter of the intact mat.
a normal 4 holed jar is just fine for LC, i would suggest putting plastic tape, hot glue, silicone, etc on 3 of the 4 holes though, so that you only have one main incoulation/extraction hole.

Is there any point at which it is imperative that my cat removes the growing LC from the incu, and halts growth?

Also... what kitty has done is put a sheet of foil beneath the lid top and then screwed the screw part on. I assume that the one hole made by the syringe piercing the foil for inoc, will not be sufficient for air exchange.
is this right?

for a jar that small, the hole will be big enough. agitating the LC while it grows also aerates the lc so you get much denser growth. you should use a grain lc though instead of honey or karo. way way better and ten times the lc you would get from other teks. good luck.
