That's what happens here in Colorado when a dry spell hits just as a mushroom starts to grow. Some parts stop growing while other parts keep trying, and you end up with a deformed mess that even Orson Miller wouldn't bother naming. While an ID could be obtained by using a microscope, it just isn't worth the effort.
They sure can be spectacular in their weirdness, though.
Happy mushrooming!

Not worth the effort... phsaw I haven't checked anything out with the microscope yet, however based on close observation of many key features I'm fairly confidant this is parched Leucoagaricus americanus. Mycelium was swiped from the patch for transplant, I really hope it takes hold, with a little more water and a bit of shade they would have been glorious.

Keep in mind that the most common mushrooms I've seen that happen to are Cortinarius. I don't know too many people who bother to ID Corts to species even when they're in good shape.

Despite poor weather conditions and being ripped from the ground for a gill picture, the larger mushroom continued to make an effort at distributing spores.
