with the genus agaricus, you will need to have a good deal of faimilarity with several things, such as often complex ranges or sequenses of bruising reactions, odors etc. this genus is generaly devided into a series of somewhat arbitrary groupings based on the nature of these observations and identification beyond these groups [which are only of limited use in determining edibility] can be extremely difficult.
many agaricus species are great edibles but most of them which are not explicitly toxic are know to cause allergic like reactions in many or at least some people. all in all, it is not a genus to play in too liberaly.
i highly recomend you read this exerpt from David Arora's 'Mushrooms Demystified' which begins his treatment of the genus and continue your readings from there: Agaricus

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Amen. Every serious mycophile should have MD! There are plenty of Agaricus in the Western US that could make you sick. I thought these might be yummy but I'm glad I didn't eat 'em!
