Continuation of the sex theme.... Love & Procreation
    #7490679 - 10/06/07 07:59 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

What is love?
Scientifically it is probably best described as a few chemicals that are released in the brain.
Logically it appears to be a form of obsession or pleasure inducing madness.
Socially it is a way of keeping people in harmony together.
In terms of evolution it is a way of making us procreate and raise children.

Does love lose its appeal?  As a child I thought of love as the ultimate thing.  Then I realized I was being tricked by my genetics and felt it was false.  Then I returned to the fact that loving someone makes you feel very happy, so even if it is false - its very rewarding.

Could you love me if I looked like this
:fatman:
and smelled of eggs?

What is dating?
Seeing how much you like another person.  Whether or not they fit into your criteria as a potential mate.

You may want to be friends / fuck them or make them a long-term lover.

Can males and females talk to each other without the love/sex part?  It seems we generally don't like each other without that!

I see people - they are very sexually attracted, so they pretend that their personalities are similar.  They alter themselves, trick themselves into believing they are similar.  Then they have babies and eventually the mundaneness forcing them to realize they are actually not similar at all, then they separate and the cycle repeats.

Is dancing any different from the way an insect performs a mating ritual?

Much of this is true to varying degree.

The female praying mantis loves her mate so much that she eats him alive after mating.

Hmmm, virgin or dead? Virgin or dead? Choices.

In mammals, so close to ourselves, it is easily recognizable in its different modalities: sexual passion, parental instinct, social solidarity, etc.

Farther off, that is to say lower down the tree of life, analogies are more obscure until they become so faint as to be imperceptible.

But does that now mean that love is not there?

If there were no real internal propensity to unite, even at a prodigiously rudimentary level, even down to the molecule itself, would it even be physically possible for love to appear higher up, with us, in hominized form?

By rights, to be certain of its presence in ourselves, we "should" assume its presence, at least in an inchoate form, in everything that is.

It would mean that love is a uniquely mammalian thingy and so not too important outside of that arena.

I do believe that love is a force in the Universe at large but bears little resemblance to what most humans refer to as love.

Isn't this the sort of thing you railed about in a recent 'God' thread? Most humans have it wrong, but you have it right?

As love is a human concept, it is exactly what people believe it to be. If it is other than what they believe it to be, it would require a new word.

what most humans refer to as love is the sentimental side of it.

i don't think this is meant to say that most people are wrong and he is correct.

not at all.

it's just one of many different perspectives,

just like some languages have several different meanings for what we understand as love.

The only thing I railed about was people claiming their personal speculations were the "truth".

I suggest instead a word change for human addiction/attachment.

Would the same word apply to dog attachment?

No, I wasn't. People rarely promise eternal love or fight with or break up with or cheat on their pets; yet it can be yet another form of attachment, no?

"Icelander, do you take this dog to be your lawful pet until a speeding truck do you part?"

"I do!"

"And, King, do you take Icelander as your lawful owner for as long as he shall feed you Purina and walk you daily?"

"Woof!"

As a one time dog trainer I did not notice this to be true. Most people have pets to supply what they don't think they can get in human relationships and so act just as fickle when things change.

I would never feed a dog anything but raw organic meat. Purina is dog shit. And my dog's name is Frankie.

I was talking to Detective Sullivan of the ------- Police Department recently. He though it quite odd how many of your neighbors had mysteriously disappeared. :uptosomething:

I was using his screen name. We don't use real names here. :nono:

My defense would be that my neighbors are not organic. They are full of pesticides and such. I would never do that to my doggie.
