Shii-take on log (pics)

Hi all.
this small log was bought ready made, with spawnplugs already inserted. All i had to do then was dunk the thing in cold water for roughly 48 hours, and place it in the shade. Temps are apparently good as mushrooms appeared only a week or so after. I think they are beautiful and i'm going to eat a few tonight. I totally recommend this method for the lazy shroomgrower/enthusiast. You are probably aware that you can buy the mycellium plugs seperately as well. Enjoy!

Nice shiitakes.
To put pictures in post read this, http://www.shroomery.org/5286/How-do-I-put-pictures-in-my-post, but instead of below the reply window, there are tabs above it, the fourth from the right opens the browser window for pictures.

Nice. Shiitake are one of my favorites. They're great grilled outside on the BBQ. RR

Yes. You can prepare them anyway you like mushrooms. I like to rub the caps with olive oil, and rub a bit of blue cheese dressing into the gills, then put on the BBQ grill. You can also saute them up in a butter/garlic/wine sauce and they'll knock your socks off. Enjoy. RR

They're also really good in a vegetable dish. Like fresh green beens or a snap pea of some sort. Just chop up the desired amount of mushroom, 2 garlic cloves, an onion and toss that in with the fresh green beans or snap peas. Use fresh vegetables only. Just use a bit of olive oil and white wine to saute the ingredients with on medium high. It's a meal in itself and a damn good one too.
Pretty mushrooms you've got there!

One more thing. Cut the stems off if you've never cooked shiitake before. Generally, the stems are ok for soups, but leave them out of your regular dishes. They're tough as hell. RR

Can you get a good clone from store-bought shii-take?

where did you get the log? what was the yield for what size of log?
that said, IMO shiitake should be prepared with plenty of water, which should all be let to evaporate ( once it evaporates, the shiitake have a more intense flavor, and are MUCH more tender, the stems become quite tasty )
so maybe do the baking bit, but cover the mushrooms with water and leave the oven door open a tad

RR: didnt get a chance to prepare em last night but i'm hoping to give it a shot today. thanks for all the info!
hotnuts: sounds delicious! I'm writing this down, lol.
simplemindedted:
i can't answer this due to lack of knowlegde on cloning. All i can say is that the mycellium is extremely vigorous and healthy looking.
vampirism: i got this log at a museum shop (outdoor museum), but they are also sold on this website:
http://www.groenetakken.nl/?gt=shiitakestammen&asso=padde>sup=
which is in dutch only. But you should be able to find these in your country as well. According to the manual this log has nutrients for roughly 5 years. You pick a flush, let it rest for a few weeks, dunk in water and repeat the process. Thanks for the preparation tips!
waixingren: thank you!
