pf tek casing questions
    #7490377 - 10/06/07 02:38 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

what up yall? this is my first post at shroomery and before we get down to business id like to thank all the great people behind this community who have worked to spread their knowledge of mycology:cool:, without all of this great info available i dont think i ever would have considered being able to grow my own mushrooms!
Im close to preppin my jars ( pf tek style, 1 pint)and i plan to case them in 50/50 peat moss/vermiculite.  My question is in regards to the terrarium, I have several 55 Liter rubbermaid-type plastic storage tubs which i am going to use.  I believe Ive read that you can essentially "case the terrarium", ie: no trays inside, use entire area of tub as the tray.  Is this really feasible to just layer the vermic/substrate/casing/ directly in the tub? Will the moisture in the casing sustain a high enough level of humidity? I was under the impression that the moisture of the casing will keep the tub humid enough due to the snap on plastic lid (although its not super tight). Would casing the entire tub would lead to higher yields compared to placing say 2 or 3 individual oven trays (individual casings) inside the tub and utilizing the tub for standard terrarium use via perilite humidification ?
I hope this isnt a bombardment of stupid questions but everyone has to start somewhere  and i want to make my first attempt a success. btw, these casings will be run alongside some directly fruiting cakes in seperate terrariums as a "safety" incase my casings dont work out.  Thanks for takin the time to help me get this straightened out and keep growin!!!:mushroom2::rasta::thumbup:

--First, search "monotubs" and "FAE monotubs".

--Second, with cakes your better off casing them in small trays and then put them in a fruiting chamber. search "RR's shotgun"

--Third, search "lighting". OK i'll give you this one....

Quote:

Light has absolutely NOTHING to do with telling the mycelium that it has reached the surface. The increased fresh air, with the corresponding drop in CO2 levels sends the mycelium that message.

Light is also NOT just to establish the direction the fruits grow. In fact, air currents have a greater effect on direction of growth than light. If you doubt this, place a fan on your crop and watch.

A few seconds of light per day will NOT help to generate a good pinset. In fact, light is a secondary pinning trigger, but an important one. The difference between three or four pins, and hundreds of pins on a substrate can be directly correlated to the length, intensity, and frequency of the light applied, provided the primary pinning triggers have been fulfilled.

The light needs to be intense enough to penetrate 1/2" into the substrate. Not all pins form on the surface. Many originate from deeper in the substrate or casing layer.

Higher frequency light above a color temperature of 5,000 Kelvin will generate far more pins than a 'red' source of light such as incandescent lamps.

Fungi is a living organism that is much more closely related to mammals such as humans, than to plants. People need to quit looking at mycelium as a different kind of plant, which it isn't. Mycelium has been shown to have circadian rhythms just like mammals, and this is the reason that 12/12 light cycles work best. This planet, and all surface life on it are based on the 24 hour day. For best results, learn to work with nature rather than against it. Mycelium has an amazing ability to cope with less than optimal conditions, and will often fruit when a grower does everything wrong. However, do everything right and watch your performance go through the roof.

id say since its your first time you should just dunk and roll your cakes.  its good that your using full pint cakes, i think they work much better, just as easy as 1/2 pints, but twice as much yield.....casing adds another step to fuck up, and you really want your first ones to work, so imo you should dunk and roll em, and maybe case 2 or 3, but starting with cakes is

you should wait to do a monotub, these are meant to be used with more bulk sub.  such as hpoo or coir, not brf

get a few rounds of cakes under your belt and you should acquire some very valuable knowledge, and some pretty tasty mushies, too....then give casing and monotubs a try

I got bags of funk and i sell em by the tons
