Questions about RR utube vid.

Hi. I'm new here. Have a few questions about the RR utube vid. 1) What is the purpose of the casing layer? 2) What is the purpose of the foil between the cakes and pearl in the FC? Thanks-

Well, a casing layer is generally used to create micro environments to keep moisture in, ircc. And to provide some surface for the mushrooms to latch onto, to a less extent.
As for the foil, I'm guessing so the water doesn't soak into the cakes, or just get the cakes covered in perilite, in general.
Although I'm sure RR will explain in due time.

The foil isn't a dealbreaker but as you see in his video, he's got the water control sorted without using the perlite to supplement it.
In years before people were dunking and so forth, a common way to rehydrate cakes was to place the cake directly on the perlite.
You can read up about casing in the FAQ section. Its great and will answer your questions.
Hope that helps

a casing layer provides two basic purposes...
1. a wet humidity blanket. The mycelium colony still wants 90-95% relative humidity but if you keep your casing layer moist and the relative humidity of the greenhouse housing it only needs to be in the 80-90% - which is infinitely easier to maintain in my humble opinion.
2. it is a contaminate barrier. We go to great lengths to ensure that the casing layer is as non-nutritious as possible and we use various types of gardening lime to raise the pH of the mixture to make this 1/2-3/4" layer as hostile an environment as for germination.
The mycelium that has colonized the substrate below will have no problem pushing it's way through this thin layer in order to fruit but hopefully any wayward contaminates that have fallen into the casing layer can't take hold in this environment...

So which method produces better results, the solid cake casing method or the crumble the cake and make a casing bed method? And which is a better casing material, the pure verm or the 50/50 verm peat mix?

i really think it depends on the cultivator, i have seen cakes rolled on verm perform like mad!! other poor, same with cake casing, or crumble casing.
Give each 1 a try. thats what im dooiing, my first batch of cakes were just dunked, not rolled, then after the first flush they will get rolled in verm.
My next set of cakes will be crumbled and cased with 50/50. I also have 2 jars of popcorn, when ready will be cased with smething else, maybe mgmc

I haven't seen much difference personally. Crubling and casing seems to give one nice big flush, while cakes will generally produce several smaller flushes. The biological effeciency of the small amount of brown rice flour in a cake isn't going to change much due to casing method, so overall yield will be about the same. Of course, exceptions always occur. If you want high yields, use the cakes to spawn pasteurized horse manure or compost, and then add a casing layer to that. Good luck. RR
