Can I re-pasteurize poo and use it again after WBS has been added?
    #7489360 - 10/05/07 05:41 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so I spawned these two poo bags the other day from some mycopath poo. I used some colonized puerto rican WBS. I made these bags out of the exact same poo and WBS that I spawned to a few monotubs.

The monotubs are coming along nicely, almost completely colonized up top. The poo bags haven't done anything at all. The mycelium like died or something, it just never came back and began colonizing the poo in the bags again.

1. Can I re-pasteurize the poo/WBS mix in the cooler and throw more spawn in?

2. Why would this happen?

Sure, you can re-pasteurize the poo/WBS mix in the cooler and throw more spawn in, no reason why not.

2. Why would this happen?
Too numerous to list, bad spawn, too impatient, I could go on.

1. It'd be preferable to sterilize the WBS + Poo in some kind of autoclaveable bag. The WBS is nutritious in a way that can promote the growth of contams if not sterilized.

2. I think this happened from the bags holding in more moisture than the tubs allow to evaporate. Believe it or not, it's quite easy to end up with too much moisture in the poo after pasteurizing. I had this problem quite a bit before I realized what it was. The excess water causes the potentially beneficial organisms to reproduce faster than the mycelium can colonize the substrate and eat them.

How did I fix this? By both squeezing out excess water and then by putting the pasteurized poo in an oven at the lowest possible temp for just long enough to evaporate some of the water off. Also this extra time in heat seems to promote the growth of the actinomycetes (thermophiles) which seem to work with the mycelium well. That's more of a theory but in any case this method worked for me.

A good way for squeezing out the water if you've pasteurized in a pillowcase or similar is by manipulating it from the outside so that the poo spreads evenly to a flat layer throughout the case (like a pillow would fill it). And then rolling a disc weight for a barbell or a rolling pin over it. A kitchen sink can be a good place for this.

Happy spawning!

won't sterilizing the bags make them useless, since the temps required would kill the benficial bacteria? I hear what you're saying though, that the endospores in the WBS could come back to haunt me if I don't sterilize and only pasteurize, I think?

if I sterilize how long should I go for?

it's just weird cause I have 5 more bags from the same poo batch and spawn run that colonized fine and are about to fruit

It's pretty much come down to six of one, half a dozen of another.
Some people swear by pasteurizing, some by sterilizing. both work.
