I don't know alot about them, but I don't think even the right ones are a beginner-safe species.
Check out these links: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/edibility.html http://www.mushroomexpert.com/amanita_muscaria.html#alba
Here is an excerpt from the page:
"You are stupid if you eat this mushroom. Yes, it may get you high--and no, I am not some uptight jerk who cares whether you take (safe) psychoactive drugs. What I care about is that if you pick wild mushrooms and eat them, trying to get high, you could easily kill yourself by misidentifying your quarry. And even if you identify Amanita muscaria correctly, you may not only get high but also put yourself in the hospital, since it contains dangerous as well as psychoactive toxins."

> What are the other kinds of mushrooms that look like the amanita muscaria?
There are actually quite a few.
You will find them on this page: http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/mainaman.html
> Are they deadly?
I don't know of any that look like A. muscaria and have the deadly amatoxins in them. There could be some though.
> do they grow in the same areas?
Yes, very similar areas.
> do they have ANY noticeable differences?
Yes, if you are good at noticing tiny differences between mushrooms. You should pick the species you are thinking about eating a few times so you can become familiar with the lookalikes in your area.
Identifying Amanita's for the table is best left to the experts, unless you are dealing with the red A. muscaria, which an intermediate level person can safely ID.
The most noticeable difference is the features on the volva.
> is there anything i need to know so that i don't consume a deadly one?
Don't eat the white ones, don't eat the ones with a cup-like volva. Don't eat anything except the plain old red Amanita muscaria until you are an expert. Make sure the plain old red A. muscaria is the correct species by checking for concentric rings on the volva.
Without a clear picture of the base, the following mushrooms can be mistaken for Amanita muscaria:
Amanita flavoconia:

Amanita frostiana:

Amanita subflavoconia:

The most common A. muscaria lookalike by far is A. flavoconia, people post that here at least once a month. I have no idea how edible that one is.

It is good to advise a lot of caution, especially since the people who ask about eating A. muscaria are always beginners, however some people get along well with it as long as they keep the dose low.
This is the best post I have seen on the subject:

Very interesting article Alan! It surely makes them more interesting to me, but I guess I have to figure out everything there is to figure out with Psilocybes

I agree with everything above except that the eastern version is yellow to orange or reddish orange. And I must stress to the beginner, Take extreme care in eating, there are reports of some varieties that are deadly poisonous, toxins that destroy the kidneys and liver, and once started, there is not coming back! Meaning you die slowly and very painfully!!!

u need to provide a shot of the vulva and stem also to give an accurate identification. habitat information too, as per the ID request rules stickied at the top of this forum. that information is important.

hey man, in answer to your question: "is there any safe way to consume them or no, like an extraction or a tea or snuff or somthing"
firstly, the toxicity of these mushrooms is greatly exaggerated. I believe there have been only 2 reported deaths in the US ever since they've been keeping records, so basically, unless you go ahead and eat like 20 of them, the worst you'll do to yourself is feel really shit.
The toxic compound in amanita muscaria is called ibotenic acid, and this stuff is not nice. fortunately, if you dry the mushrooms, rather than eat them fresh, the vast majority of the ibotenic acid in the mushroom will convert into muscimol, the non-toxic psychoactive compound of the mushroom. this is the stuff that gets you high.
Basically so long as you have thouroughly dried the amanitas, you have very little chance of dying. as for the hangover and nausea, i cant make any promises.
if you havent already, check out erowid.org . they have a section on amanitas and it gives a rough guide as to dosage, and a lot of other info that'd be useful for someone wanting to get high off these mushrooms.
good luck.
