Why I stopped posting in P&S
    #7487966 - 10/05/07 10:37 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

This is not a whine its an observation...

I stopped posting here because I feel that everybody is wrapped up in their own reality bubble, this is generally true for humans as a whole though.

It reminds of when I worked on a building site when I was younger - none of the workers could handle another worker suggesting a different or better method of performing a task. They would take it as a personal insult and put up their defenses and lower themselves to a game of subtlety trying to be the superior mind!

I explained my observation to them and they also resorted to performing the game upon me - thinking I was somehow actually saying that I was superior because I could see the game. I explained that my purpose for telling them was because I liked to be taught other methods - then I am more equipped to pick the easiest method of doing a job!

This is what I tend to see here. I came here expecting to see many very open-minded genuine people. Granted I have met more here than I did on the building site!

But this is why threads here really never progress, because each individual doesn't seem to be willing to give flexibility to ponder another viewpoint. People are too quick to try and defend their egotistical bubble, when often the bubble is not even being attacked.

That and the fact that only half the posters seem to actually read the thread and let the point sink in before they reply.

I'm here to learn - sometimes I do but not as often as I'd like too without these obstructions. Truly ask yourself - why are you here?

To the open minds that are here- Let us continue to learn!

I used to post here a lot under a different name.

The only active threads are the ones with disagreements. Most of the disagreements here come from misunderstandings.

Then someone comes along with something intelligent to say, they express themselves clearly, and nobody can disagree. You get a couple people saying "nice post" and in a few hours the post gets pushed to page 2 and beyond by all the intense arguments.

If everybody expressed themselves better, there would be no fighting, no message boards. Maybe even no internet, I don't know.

not everybody is going to understand everybody, it is nature. we each have our own unique ways of expressing ourselves, some of us are poets and some are intellects and some are in between. not everybody has experienced the same life and the same depths, we all come from different places so this must be accepted.

I disagree. Read The Power of Now, or Be Here Now (while tripping), or Zen Mind Beginner's Mind. Text can be a powerful conveyor of stillness and insight. And sometimes it takes awhile to sink in, or you're not really conscious that it has had an effect at all.

my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

i agree with both of you.

in one way text cannot convey the subtlety of human emotion as well as real face to face communication,

and in another way text allows, if the words are wisely chosen, to deliver a message that is pure in meaning, clear and precise in its transmission.

i also agree/disagree.  there have been lots of studies to show that text-based communication (email, forums, chat) are understood about 20% of the time.

Text is a good medium though, because it's the only method I know of that is accessible to anyone who wants it for explaining complex, or simple things.

It's also the only record we have of history - writings.  I love being able to sit on the fence for some issues!

But this is why threads here really never progress, because each individual doesn't seem to be willing to give flexibility to ponder another viewpoint. People are too quick to try and defend their egotistical bubble, when often the bubble is not even being attacked.

I don't think it's a matter of defending our bubbles. I ponder the questions asked and if they don't fit into logical constructs then I'll argue why I think they're fallacious; if there's a problem with the proposition then there's no point in progressing with it until it's fixed. Part of being flexible is being able to disagree with a proposition.

I'm here to learn - sometimes I do but not as often as I'd like too without these obstructions. Truly ask yourself - why are you here?

I'm here because I enjoy philosophy and more specifically, the more obscure philosophies this community offers up, but not necessarily to agree with them.

The reality bubble comment struck me as incredibly comical coming from you. Should I make the same cynical metaphors about your beliefs in aliens? It's never about protecting egos in philosophy, but examining each postulate to guarantee the most precise answer we can know.

I think some people like to debate over philosophy. They like to try and prove if something is real or if it makes sense and so on. I think other people just like to hear peoples thoughts and explore them for the fun of it and dont like the idea of challenging someone else's beliefs.  I think both groups may have a hard time understanding each other and probably sometimes even offend each other.  There are people here who communicate in a different way to me, and I don’t always agree with the way they do it,  just like im sure they don’t always  (or possibly ever ) agree with the way I  communicate. But in the short time ive been reading these posts they have helped me to realize some important things and I have actually changed a fairly fundamental view point of mine.  So to me, these discussions are preety cool!

I'm afraid you have made assumptions. I don't believe in aliens because I don't believe anything.

I just state what I and millions of others have seen - which is that I have seen a highly advanced craft landing that I don't think is likely to be human technology.

This could be assumed a reality bubble, but it is actually an observation. Its the same as me saying that a flame is hot. Most that have touched the flame would agree although you can debate forever about what the flame is, what the hot feeling is etc Clearly nothing can be proved 100%

That why the statement "I think therefore I am" was made. Its the root point of truth - anything else is best guessing.

Good question,
BUT
Its the only solid root. Every indivdual KNOWS that they are THINKING. What else is there that is solid and not debatable?

Now you try to debate the fact that you are thinking...

Tell me, are you thinking or are you not thinking!!!??

The issue here is not about the existence of thinking, there are means through which we determine the existence of it, machines which measure our brain activity and so on.
HOWEVER.
"I think therefore I am" is trying prove that we exist by solely the fact that we think.
And my question addressed to you was not whether or not we think, but how does the fact that we think is a prove for our existence?

If you are thinking then you must be something.

It proves your existance because you yourself know that you are thinking/exerience.

You don't know that anybody else is, so that can't be proved.

The machine cannot prove we are real because whats to say this is the true reality!?

Do you think that thinking is not prove of reality?

'I think therefore I am' is saying that the only true fact is that you yourself know you are thinking/experiencing.

I personally stopped because I found the one I love. :inlove:

If that's true then that would have been your main reason to begin posting here. Of course once one finds "true love" then all physiological and spiritual questions are answered for all time. That's just how life works.

That is not what millions of others have seen. That is a personal judgement (a chasm jump) based upon minimal information. One cannot look at a hull and tell point of origin.

And of course, of these millions of people that have seen these craft up close, not one has a decent camera that can take a clear picture...

That's only because Hyper Spatial Elves leave no marks, I thought it was a well known fact.

That is a good metric for 'true love'.

I'm afraid you have made assumptions. I don't believe in aliens because I don't believe anything.

I just state what I and millions of others have seen - which is that I have seen a highly advanced craft landing that I don't think is likely to be human technology.

Ya, this amounts to a game of semantics whereby you're trying to place yourself outside the same framework you used to persecute other people on this forum. Anyone who isn't religious makes the same observations you do in order to form an idea of reality. When a ball falls a billion times, you can be pretty damn sure that ball is going to fall to the ground and you can believe the next time you drop a ball it's going to fall. This doesn't place you inside a bubble, if one day the ball disappears and a turkey lands on the floor I would reconsider my ideas on gravity not ignore it. But to try and say you don't believe anything is schizophrenic.

This could be assumed a reality bubble, but it is actually an observation. Its the same as me saying that a flame is hot. Most that have touched the flame would agree although you can debate forever about what the flame is, what the hot feeling is etc Clearly nothing can be proved 100%

Heat is an energy state, that's about it. Logical positivists ran into the problem of the infinite regression of verifiability, but then Popper presented the idea of falsifiability and a new way to verify the universe was in science's hands.

I must be scitzo then

How can I truly believe anything.

People are telling me to disregard what I've seen - it never happened because it doesn't fit into the common consensus version of reality.

I can and do think its likely that the ball will fall to the ground but I cannot know it will or that the ball truly exists at all.

I think if your beliefs are solid then you are flawed, you can make observations of likeliness based on repetition - thats all.  If you died and realized you were actually plugged into a reality simulator all along then you would realize that your beliefs were incorrect.  As I and nobody else knows certain truth then how can I fully believe anything other than the fact I know that I am thinking/observing?

I don't think I'm persecuting people, I just disagree with some peoples methods of understanding reality.  Peoples observations become their reality, anything beyond that is unknown and thus ignored but it doesn't mean it isn't there.

If you're honest, IMO, you really can't. Especially your senses and memory.

Thats debatable. The many people who have witnessed these crafts occupants would agree that they do not appear to be human.

I look at humans and see we are flying planes, we still drive using combustion engines. Its one hell of a chasm jump to say we are secretly flying craft so advanced that the can appear to teleport and defy gravity.

Then theres the fact that craft like this have been reported so long throughout history.

Which is the bigger leap of faith - to say these craft don't appear man-made or to say we have had secret technologies for hundreds of years that far surpass anything the whole known world has been able to create?

Theres also the fact that this craft seems to not give a shit who see's them. The one I saw low flew over a residential area and landed in fields. There have been many other reported incidents of the same. Why would someone fly a secret technology somewhere that exposes it - when theres no need to? Most countries fly their secret technology in places where it will be kept a secret.

Your observations are very true! Unfortunately it's survival of the fitist in the real world. It's the brain trying to stay alive in this cruel world. It's human nature for people to act in that way. Many people do it subconsciously. It takes the bigger person to realize what's going on and ignore it.

It was. The main reason I have been drawn to interacting here was to develop my mind and a perspective congruent with reality in order to center in being, to find and be in love.

Is this your experience in life? :sherlock:

It isn't mine, in any case. My last few days have been an intense experience of awareness and learning from reality, as my life situation has been changing, as well as developing myself, orientating myself through action towards a new point in my life...... The catalysts for these realizations have nothing to do with being in "true love", as you have chosen to express it as, although my situation is manifesting as it is to teach me these lessons because of the fact that I am "in love". In love, in being, being aware, its all the same. In expressing that I have found the one I love, it is simply stating that I have found an amazing person that I love being with, exploring reality together. I don't quite identify with your concept of "true love", my friend. :smirk:
