Hello, I'm obviously new to this and haven't yet tried a grow but will soon. I've been doing some reading on the PF Tek and have a question (and will have many more): Why is it so important to have a sterile environment (glove box, hood, etc) during inoculation but not during incubation?

becuase we are providing an environment that not only favours the growth of mushroom fungus but also many other organisms like moulds and bacteria.
Moulds and bacteria will rapidly grow on pretty much any nuitricious food source we use for mushroom cultivation. So it is highly important that we do not allow them to get into our grows. Once a contamination gets a hold of a substrate it will take over and all u end up is a substrate full of something nasty and potentially hazordous to your health
If u are very sterile with your procedures, once mushroom fungus has complelty colinised your substrate it is then has some resistance to contamination, but u should still be very sterile with birthing, casings and ur fruting chambers.
Nature has its way of keeping everything in balance.
In cultivation we dont have that help so moulds and bacteria can easily flourish if we even give it the slightest chance.
search youtube for lets grow mushrooms and watch the videos, they cover all of this and show u some examples of contamination.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I understand the need for sterility and have watched the "Let's Grow" videos. I am very concerned about contams b/c they are obviously the biggest problem w/ growing shrooms. From what I can tell from what I've read and seen in the videos is that the jars are kept in a sterile environment only through inoculation and then they are stuck in any old box or closet to incubate and hopefully colonize. I just don't understand this. Please help me if you can.
