Ahg, a new bee bulk substrate question

I thought I had this straight but I'm second guessing myself now. Can you help me get this straight?
After I am going to colonize WBS, I'll break it up and spread it evenly over my bulk substrate of compost and coir and coffee grounds
I will let it fully colonize (rubbermaid covered with holes covered with micropore tape for gas xchange)
I will then spread vermiculite over it, .5-1" (rubbermaid still covered same as above)
I'll wait till I see mycelium poking through the casing
THEN I'll induce fruiting (and start doing FAE/12-12 light)
Is that about what I'm supposed to do, assuming pasteurization etc is taken care of?

No.
You want to layer it into the tray. A layer of substrate, followed by a layer of spawn, etc. You don't want any of the wbs or other grains left on the surface. Make sure there's a layer of compost/manure over all of the top layer of grains. Some growers mix the spawn thoroughly into the compost and that works too. I've done it both ways and prefer the former.
Plain vermiculite is a very poor choice of casing material. I'd look into peat/verm for better performance. RR

+1 on vermiculite being a poor casing material, out of the bag.
I would also mention that you should keep tub in the low 70's if you can during incubation because it will be generating a lot of internal heat during colonization of the compost.
And don't forget that the substrate needs it's FAE restricted (like it was in the jars of grain) during colonization. Cover it with something providing limited air-flow during that first week until you fruit it.

Thanks everyone, definitely helps to know that stuff, esp. the layering.
What I am now just learning is that store-bought compost is NOT the way to go, which is totally disappointing.
I really want to make this grow worthwhile and maximize each flush, and without poop or compost it seems kinda futile. Any words of encouragement on this?
