WOOOHOO!! Wild mushies w/ PIC

About three weeks ago I buried one cased spawn of PF and one of Z+ in my wife's shade garden (served by an automatic sprinkler system) because of a fear the casing was showing early signs of contamination w/ Trich. I totally wrote it off and essentially forgot about it as a "discard" simply to preserve future indoor grows.
This morning while walking about inspecting the flowers, I was greeted with this happy sight!!! Check it out!! "Wild" mushies, and a NICE sized mycelial mat spanning several square feet!!! Note the popsicle stick marker towards the rear. I put that there to mark the "grave site" so I wouldn't step on it.

WOOOOHOOO!!!
So, boys and girls, don't fret the threat of contamination, at least in the fall. Dig a hole, cover it up...and see what develops!!! N.B.

Thanks, cbiegel! At the moment, I'm happy as a pig in you-know-what. I noticed the caps of two shrooms were cracked (too hot and a bit dry today) so I ran the sprinkler for 15 minutes and gave it a "light" but thorough misting. I MAY have to pick some tomorrow morning before I go to work. I'm terrified the squirrels will decide to have a feast at my expense, and I'll end up with none.
IMPORTANT: Anyone know if squirrels will eat cubies??? Thanks, N.B.

Yes, squirrels can actually eat mushrooms/fungi. It's probably not more likely than nuts and seeds though, but you could easily put something over the shrooms to keep them out like an upside down casing tray or a bucket or 2. Maybe just a lil pile of leaves over them. That might look better in a garden

or, leave them alone, and urinate in a jar, and pour drops of urine around the perimeter of the patch, keeps most animals away, the smell of human urine. Good also for outdoor marijuana growth, keeps deer from nibbling your goodies! I have seen squirrels run off with all varities of mushrooms in their mouths. It's not uncommon, they only hoarde up nuts so they have something to eat during the winter, other months, they eat what is available, within their diet.

Awesome! I had some success as well with the same situation, got about 140 grams wet off a most-likey contamed bag that I buried in a compost pile outside.
And yep squirrels will eat damn near anything. The biggest threat to my shrooms was my 7 month old lab who eats any and everything he finds...I had to keep him away from the garden area for about a week.

OK...here is what I devised for mushie protection vs. squirrels! Simple, fast, cost = $0.00, and light, air, and water can get in and out.

Wife is visiting family for Columbus Day holiday (she's off on Monday) so I can leave this until Tuesday morning, no questions asked. LOL! Problem solved, I think! N.B.

Better close that gap in the upper left. Squirrels can flatten out like the rats they are to get through very tight places. RR

The outdoor ones, especially from something you had already given up on, always seem like more of a gift don't they?
Your wife doesn't know what you've been up to hunh? How did you manage that?

Yes, a special gift to begin with, and indeed, an acknowledgment that "life will find a way" to quote Jeff Goldblum (Dr. Ian Malcom) in the original 1993 Jurassic Park.
W/R/T the better half...Well, I presently cultivate (and we both enjoy eating) a variety of mushrooms, Oysters mostly, with Shitake on the way and maybe Portabello this winter, so she knows I cultivate mushrooms, she just doesn't know one from another, and I don't discuss it with her. I very explicitly mark stored non-edible species as "poisonous - research purposes only" and she gives them a wide berth. Plus, its just the two of us now. Both kids are away at college, so no accidents are likely there, either.
Since I have an extensive background in a variety of scientific endeavors and possess a lot of very sophisticated equipment that I have either purchased or built over the years, it never comes as a surprise to her that I am investigating one thing or another that has piqued my interest. Regards, N.B.

Final take from the "WOOO HOOO" wild mushies outdoor grow was 46 mushrooms (one casing, first flush) for a total of 257.8 grams.
