Yorkshire UK - Liberty Cap Confirmation
    #7485827 - 10/04/07 05:57 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, wondering if these are liberty caps or not, they seem to fit the bill. Our first time hunting and there were loads of these things, this was all we could carry because we forgot to bring a bag. Going back up tomorrow though to get more providing these are them.

Date: 4th October
Weather: Sunny and clear, grass was a bit wet due to rain last night
Location: North York Moors
Habitat: A mix of long and short grass, grazed by sheep and rabbits
Cap: Brown fading to tan, some slimy, some not. Between 1cm and 1.5cm wide
Gills: Creamy white colour
Stem: White, really thin about 5mm, slimy, between 1 inch and 2 inches tall

Aw really? We got our hopes up over nothing then :frown:

What species could they be then? Because they look similar to me at least.

Mycena SP.

The only one that could be a lib is in the top pic, the 7th mycena along from the top left (the one with roots/mossy/messing lower stem) has a second mushroom with a different shape and coloured cap leaning against its stem. That looks a bit more promising but would need a close up.

Sorry :frown:

You should study the macroscopic features of the libs a little more and then go back to were you found these. There are bound to be more. just pick them out of those mycena. BTW you are still a lucky bastard for finding the one maybe two libs that you did.

Gills are the wrong colour man,, take a look at the one uarewotueat circled..

Libs also have a sticky gel coating on their caps. If you take a fresh specimen and split the cap slowly with your fingers, you should be able to see this gel layer stretching across the split.

They have to be fresh/moist to see it tho..

This may be another one. Much fresher, if it is one. Impossible to tell without another shot, but the color is right for a young, fresh lib.

Thanks guys, I must say that I'm having fun hunting so far. That was all we could find before it got a bit too dark to see. I think we're going to go back up again, if we do I'll get some photos of the location, sheep everywhere, hundreds of the damn things!

270 makes me a happy bunny,, :snowman:

I found my first blue one too.
The scenery around that area's just awesome, i never really knew what that part of Yorkshire was like having never been there until recently.
The colours across the valley were amazing.

Hope you did well yourself,,

Went back up today and found another half ounce or so of libs. Got spooked by a couple of farmers, but they didn't seem to mind we were there, they were more interested in rounding up their sheep.

No pictures though unfortunately, lost the usb cable for the camera.

And yeah mikeyyork, the north york moors have some pretty nice views.

Haha, yeah. One flew by us too, all this was worsened by the fact that we smoke a few fatties before going up. I would not recommend weed before doing something illegal. Talk about paranoia!

haha, yeah, i know what you mean.

i went out this morning, but the fields are boone dry. we badly need some rain. i found one poor little dried up libby. maybe next time.

Going to give it a couple days and see if the weather gets wetter to bring the little fellas out again. There's still to be found around the reed but not so much on the grassy areas. Dogs going for another walk tomorrow to see how things are looking. On the other hand the valley had lots field mushrooms growing for my breakfast and had my first puffball yesterday so there's always something to nibble while we wait for the next spurt.
