just fill a pot with water, stick the cakes in and use seomthing like a couple plates to keep the cake submerged under the water, then wash ur jars ready for the next batch,

You would be fine to leave them in the jars if you want to while dunking. However, it's not necessary to take the cakes out, rinse jar, and put cake back in. If you're gonna do that, you might as well just dunk them in a large pot! It's not gonna hurt them to just open the tops, fill them with water, and then sit them in a pot/kettle (you can put water in the kettle too if you want). Personally, i'd just birth them, dunk em for 24 hours, then roll in fresh verm and put into the FC. It's always worked great for me. GL

Remember to refrigerate the cakes as they are soaking, this will help hold off any bacteria or mold in the water.

My cake's are ready to come out of the dunk, I am looking to roll them in the verm. In the archived threads I was looking for word on whether the verm has to be sterilized via boiling in jars again? I also read that people add some water then microwave it on High for a minute, then repeat.
but since I saw this thread going on the front page of the forum, figured I would jump on board.
Once I've got the verm ready (if it requires sterilization again), I simply just roll the cake over it to completely cover? How much water & verm shall it take to cover this per .5 pint cake? Always striving for efficiency.
My first time attempting to cultivate mushrooms at home..modified the old pf tek to use stuff i've got around the place, after these cakes are dead I am going to experiment with casings. I'll be back, and eventually I hope to contribute back to the community once I know what I am doing =) thanks in advance

You don't neeed to sterilize the verm. If you want, you can put some verm on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 for 25-30 minutes and you are good to go. It's not totally necessary but it can remove any contams that may be lurking on the verm. Also, you don't need to wet it. After you get the verm out of the oven, put it into a good sized bowl. Then rinse your cake off under tap water after you take it out of your dunking pot and roll the cake around in the dry verm. Kinda like rolling a piece of chicken around in flour. Then place the cake in the FC. Wait 30 minutes and then go back and mist your cakes with the verm on them. Waiting the 30 minutes allows the dry verm to get a good hold onto your cake. Then after that first 30 min is up, mist your cakes real good. Repeat this process several times over the next 24 hours. The verm will then be good and moist and will act as a casing layer for your cake. GL

Putting them in the frig is unnecessary.

I agree that a cold dunk is best for successful results.

Cubensis is a tropical species that fruits during hot weather and does not benefit in any way from a cold shock. In fact, it slows down fruiting considerably.
Dunking over night in the refrigerator is not cold shocking. It is recommended in order to prevent bacteria buildup during the time the cake is under water and can't fend for itself. If it's not practical to dunk in the refrigerator, you can simply change out the water with fresh every 8 hours or so. Rinse the cake well under the faucet before and after the dunk. RR
Obviously I stand corrected. I personally don't do it, But if RR says you should, I would recommend following what he says.

No.
For the cakes to absorb water, they must be able to expand. If you leave them in the jars, the cakes can't expand, therefore they can't absorb much water. In addition, the pressure the water exerts on the cake helps to force water into the mycelium. RR
