Holes In Substrate Tray?
    #7484210 - 10/04/07 09:39 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

hey folks-

swim was going to use aluminum trays that are about 4 inches deep for a hpoo bulk grow...swim was wondering if they need to drill holes in the bottom of the tray to ensure proper FAE and drainage of mycopiss, or if the trays aren't big enough to require that?

thx!

no, just poke a few fork holes in the foil that you cover the top with while its colonizing

1. no holes are required.

2. the mycelium will eat and absorb the aluminum and there are several studies linking aluminum in humans to breast cancer and Alzheimer's Disease.

Line the tray with plastic or use plastic trays instead. Some species of mycelium attack aluminum, and others don't. You can grow oysters on aluminum with no problem, but shiitake and many cubensis strains will eat holes right through it.

Never drill holes in a substrate tray because it encourages pinning on the bottom due to the increased air exchange.

And when pins go unnoticed on the bottom, they rot, which is a stealthy/unseen contaminate vector...
