I do too much drugs.

I kinda realized it today after yet another day of class missed because I slept in got me dropped from a second course: I do too much drugs and have been in denial about it for a long time. I'm not burnt-out, I'm not an addict, I'm not a junkie or a loon. I indulge in the safest drug of them all. But I am a slacker. And smoking so much weed may have made it far worse, with my academic performance this semester taking a huge hit (not the kind I would usually mean). I feel like a god damned fool. My mind is all I have to get me by in life, and the only way to back it up and strengthen it in a productive way is to do well in school. And yet, I continue to fuck up, to procrastinate, to sleep in, to not give it the time or effort I know it needs.
I've always had serious issues with school and getting myself organized, so I figured that the pot probably wasn't making a difference. But I realized that while my procrastination and slacker tendencies have been a fact of my life since well before I began smoking weed, in that time I have gained something that I thought would help me more: motivation. For the first time, I truly care about succeeding in school, educating myself, finding my way into more learned circles, and doing something with my life. For the first time I know just how important and vital it is that I stand up, to do something meaningful with my brain, to carve a place for myself in the world. The fact that I'm nosediving this semester terrifies me.
Suddenly it's abundantly obvious: smoking weed every day is not helping me. I use it daily to have fun and unwind, not to mention to get to sleep (I've always had insomnia too). But the sleeping in, the laziness, the procrastination, it has to stop. It's killing me. I'm not going to quit entirely but weekday use is beginning to seem downright maladaptive.
Does anybody else have similar experiences? Or, more importantly, tips for seriously cutting down when daily tokage has become a ritual and I'm surrounded by stoner buddies?

I can't say I'm a habitual smoker, I keep my use really low, but when I smoke its on weekends and even then I try not to.
The one thing is that if you're with stoner buddies, chances are they'll make it real hard for you to stop, because they'll be smoking all the time right? So thats one area you'll have to be tough in.
I really wish I had something more constructive to say

I do too.
I used to deny it.
That part was easy to quit.

I think you are putting the wrong perspetive on the problem.
I smoked multiple times daily in college and had no trouble succeeding at the top of my class (and in a difficult program, not some community college). The issue you have is the same issue you had before you smoked, procrastination, not giving time or effort, etc.
The root of the issue is what you need to address. If you have to quit smoking to address it, so be it. There is no magic wand. Just do it.

Yeah, I do see people talking about smoking up heavily while in school and still succeeding. It kind of gave strength to the idea that the pot wasn't really affecting me.
I do agree with you, though... it's not like pot is some menace standing in my way. But at the moment it is somewhat of a stumbling block in getting my shit together. I imagine if I was already living on a suitable schedule for school, the weed wouldn't hurt things nearly as much, but in the meantime it makes it harder to do the things I need to do. I've never had a schedule like that, and I've never been academically successful.

If smoking is in fact habitual then stopping smoking will probably increase your ability to meet academic expectations.
If your smoking isn't habitual, it might simply be coincidental, in which case, yes, you will need to address the real root problem.
Most people with problems with pot that have problems with school tend to have an easier time improving their school issues when they're not dealing with a habitual drug use pattern as well.
Good luck in figuring out the best way to deal with it OP!

"Habitual" is pretty much the best way to describe it. It's been months since since I went through a day without getting high at all (a nine-day, weed-free trip to Tennessee that was actually quite pleasant), and months before that as well.
It also bothers me because I know the quality of my stonage decreases too... weed used to be fantastically psychedelic and thought-provoking for me, now it is merely a daily medication with some of that stuff occasionally poking in from the fringes. Almost like beer or cigarettes. I need to make it into an occasional pleasure again so I can get reacquainted with the Mary Jane I fell in love with.

If you had a sudden realisation, then its probably true. The hard thing about quiting weed is that its a life style. I had to quit a few years ago, i hit rock bottom, which kind of made it easy to quit. I smoke it now, but only socially. My idea, is that you have to stop buying it, unless its to smoke with your friends once a week or so. Stop smoking at home by yourself. Try to not even have any in your home, because if its there you will smoke it. Turn it into a social thing you can look forward to.

Good advice.
I recommend abstaining for a period of at least 2 months... that will give your brain enough time to get mostly back to sober status.
If possible, avoid other drugs including alcohol during this time as well. If you want to step back into using substances, do it with a clear intention of how often you want to use and try to stick with a plan.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I haven't decided how I'm going to approach this yet, but I do know that once I go through what I have I'm not going to smoke on weekdays anymore at all. Two months seems like a bit much especially considering how many friends I like to toke with, but in all honesty I'm considering it. When I was thinking about school today my attitude on weed kinda doubled up and something that I've loved without reservation ever since I discovered it lost a shitload of its luster for me in just a few minutes.
This isn't the first time I've had a minor meltdown on this forum, and rather than getting jeers and bullshit like I would just about anywhere else on the net I get advice and encouragement. I love you guys.

Well I have been in a similar situation to you, you have to decide if what your actually doing is something you really want to do or not, or are you just being lazy.
If it was really worth doing you would be getting out there everyday wouldnt you?

It's " I do to MANY drugs", not "to MUCH drugs". Much would be used as follows. "I do drugs to MUCH".
So i'll have to agree.

Even went as far as make a list of things i need to do and try and cross atleast one off a day. This seems to be working out for me. Maybe you should try andjust not smoke in the daytime. I have the very same problem Tchan, i feel for ya. I'm a very intelligent person but lately i have missed a bunch of classes and work due to sleeping in and/or slacking off. The reason for this is probably polydrug abuse for me as i drink way too much, i may be an alcoholic not sure, and i take numerous pharmacuticals and smoke weed recreationaly. Don't get me wrong i think weed has its place, but as of late i simply cannot wake-and-bake because i end up getting absolutely nothing done that day. Its tough to make a balance but i've decided to avoid smoking during the day, only at night before bed if i have the bud and the initiative. But i think i gotta cut down my drinking as well if i wanna succeed.

Smoking on and off is the only way I can enjoy weed. I found smoking it every day made me apathetic, grumpy (without it), and just lazy.
good luck

If weed smokin becomes somethin where it interferes with important things in life, then it is officially addiction. The whole point of not bein an addict is knowin self control. If you can't control yourself, then you must admit to bein an addict. Some people shouldn't smoke weed btw, cause there are always those who end up likin it too much. Same thing with every other drug.

I smoke too much weed, I admit it. The only thing is that I don't see myself quitting anytime in the near future. that weed.

I read about halfway through the thread and I have some advice that might be of use.
I have one friend back home that used to smoke daily and it really wasn't a good influence on him. He wound up getting in trouble with the cops multiple times and one time he finally decided to quit.
He doesn't smoke anymore but at the same time he didn't address the problems he's always had in the first place. What's worse is as he came off the weed he just compensated for it by drinking more booze.
Morale of the story: Get some help and address the real problem. Don't come off the pot and just swap it for something else. From what you've said it sounds like you need some time off of everything.
I wish you success.

Time off everything as in time off all drugs or just a destressing period?

Time off all your stress and drugs. How about changing your diet? or something similar to that. Something you can do that makes you feel good, then face the real issues that are there.
