Oyster Contam?

Hey guys,

I had a bag of oyster on rye and had some extra after spawning, so I put it in a plastic tray 3" deep and approximately 5"x12". I then put a layer of hydrated verm right out of a new bag ontop and put a layer of glad press and seal (it can be used as a very slow filter).

It looked fine when I fruited it, now it looks like some of the overylayed mycelium is turning brown on the surface. It looks like it could be a secretion from the mycelium like some species seem to do (like shitake, reishi). There are definate health knots forming in one corner but about 15% of the tray has this brown mat on it. When I rubbed it with a q-tip a little of the brown came off.

Does oyster do that coloring of its mycelium where exposed to air? It's blue oyster if that makes a difference.

It seems it was a contamination, because today I had a little green on there too. This is dissapointing considering theres my last other oyster in there, a couple handfuls of colonized rye in a ziplock looking perfect with a small X cut in it. I have the strain on agar but I had 5 lbs of rye i spawned most of it to straw in my house, and then the ants ate through my mycropore tape filter patch and were feasting and contaminated. So this little mini-bag is my last current chance here for a couple mini oysters in the next week ... I just hope it can survive being in the SC with those two contams having been maye 7 inches away. Like I said, though, their only point of entry would have been that X where I want it to fruit
