so iv been back for about a day now from my week longadventure seeing phil and freinds around the great western united states. i am philled to the brim with energy, cannot ait to put it to good use.
ok here we go
Greek
i headed down to the bay from eugene. got puled over on the way down but luckily not searched or ticketed. i diddnt want to have to explain what the orange stuff was in the bottom of my freebase pipe :eyes: made it back to marin safe and sound, next day me and my buddy blake headed out to bearkly. now im not sure if this is really natinal news but some students at UC bearkly have taken up residence in a grove of oak trees in order to stop them from being cut down and paved over. so we went and visited them, i spent a good hur drawing on the side walk before the show. i drew a big oak tree shaded rainbow clores with a skull in it with the words "let it grow" wrighten underneith. so that was a good possitive way to start my day so we pick up some L and head into the show
setlist- (for those who care)
Sept. 23, 2007 Greek Theater Berkeley, CA
Set 1: Good Morning Little Schoolgirl Good Lovin'> Why Don't We Do It In The Road> Deal, The Weight, @Gone Wandering @Cumberland Blues, @*^Supersede
Set 2: Jam> Playing in the Band> *Mexican Girl, Candyman Fire on the Mountain (Pee Jam) St Stephen> Jam> *A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall The Wheel> Eyes of the World Sugar Magnolia E: Donor Rap / Intros #Going Down The Road Feeling Bad
Phil (bass, vocals, Molo (drums) Jackie Greene (guitar, vocals) Larry Campbell (guitar+) Steve Molitz (keys, vocals) @with Barry Sless on Pedal Steel #with Mark Karan on guitar & vocals
show started out great. with a kicking good morning little school girl. Phil really seems to be feeling out his songs now. i had no idea what alot of the songs where till the vocals kicked in. hes giving alot of old classics like school girl, and deal new life. another great highlight was why dont we do it in the raod. at one point jackie kinda treailed of on vocals leaving only phil to sing passionatly "whhhhy dont we do it in the rooooaaaad!" crowd was boucin second set was awsme. p[layin was kinda short but the fire on the mountain--> st. stephen made me loose it. one cool meory i have is a little baby (-6mo) taking his first steps to st.stephen. granted his parents where helping him and he was far to young to actualy be able to walk but it was grand none the less. so many crystal clear memories, its hard to choose one. a hard rain was a fucking amazing surprise. my dad always told me that song was wrighten for me, seeing as how im his "blue eyed son" and all gdtrfb was a great encore and it was great to see Mark Karren alive and well, bald and beautiful. a grand little time in ym home town area.
flash forward 1 weeks. i am heading out to red rocks across most of oregon, idaho, whyoming, and then finnaly swooping down over the rockies into denver. my buddy goes to school up there so it was great to chill with him shoot the shit and just have a nice ol reunion.
Red Rocks fuck. what to say. nothing can be said. i had to amazing of a time. i cannot extract any words from such a potent expereince, but i shall try. we explored the rocks all day me and my buddy M. the around 7 we headed into the show. i scarfed down my 5 grams of mushies and waited for the show...
set list- Set 1: Bertha, Big River *Midnight Rider, Candyman *Cold Black Devil Deal
Set 2 Acoustic: Friend of the Devil *Sweet Somewhere Bound Deep Elem Blues Brokedown Palace Tell Me Mama, Ripple
Set 3: A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Cryptical Envelopment> The Other One> Dark Star (v1)> Mountains of the Moon> Dark Star (v2)> China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider
E: Donor Rap / Intros Not Fade Away
Phil Lesh (bass, vocals) John Molo (drums) Jackie Greene (guitar, vocals) Larry Campbell (guitar+) Steve Molitz (keys)
first set went off. hard. bertha was a great energy started and big river again had been bred into a new verssion that was almost unditectable till the song actualy started. larry singin great on big river. once again dealbut this time it was a little longer and defently more rockous.
ok heres wher eit gets tuff. phil and freinds leave the stage and promise to return with somthing "special" holy fuck there bring out a stand up bass!. this is going to be astral.... as the band returns to there striped down street preformer gear the crowd erupts. iv never seen this many people so fucking jazzed before. FREIND OF THE DEVIL! and just like that the glow sticks come out and i am caught inthe green blue and yellow deluge of an acoustic glow stick war. a bit sureal to say the leased. "the cheese heads have arrived" i remember saying this whole set was jsut beautiful... i cant even begin to search for somthing to describe it.. holy? perfect? pure? life affirming? they all fall far short. this set boiled over with soul. durring the set closer, ripple, the whole crowd seemed to be completly numb with euphoric amazment. right as they song the line" where there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow" a huge gust of wind blasted the crowd. and we all cheered. jackie greene was getting noticably teared up twords the end of ripple. when they finished he just kinda ran up to phil leaned against him and hugged him then walked of stage brushing tears from his eyes. i was crying. the peaople infront and behind me where cring, the preformers where crying. it was all just too much. i was not worthy of such divinity
wow that was gonna be tuff to beat. but then..... blaam set 3 starts off with another hard rains gonna fall. again, toattaly renewed and revamed since the last time i heard it. amazing. and just when i couldent stand any more amazment.the ekements came back into play and. it started raining..... "and jackine screamed "And its a hard, its a hard, its a hard AND ITS A HARD. ITS A HARD RAAAAAAAINS, A GONNA FALL!" again the whole place went tottaly bat shit nuts. then shit started going off. Thats it for the other one-> dark star-> mts. of the moon-> dark star. during this whole sequence i was lost in a trrent of primal grooves. the rocks where fucking shreeking colors and bleading stars out into the sky. the sky itself was filled with billowy purple clowds wafting by the huge grinning moon. at one poitn i swear phil and the boys where playing to the wind. as the wind gusted down the ampitheater to the stage they got very quite and sparce, letting the air carry there instraments. :
the air filled tight with densly coil;ed pattern forming a living matrix conecting every single person with ever musician. smoking crater of my mind.... bla bla bla you get the idea
mts. of the moon was perticularly amazing phil was spot on the whole song and jackie at one point tore that shit apart. he raised it to a blistering rock out then set it right back down nice and easy where it had starrted. this kid has some groove in him as phil sang "mountains of the moon electra bow and bend to me..... bend to meee" i gazed up at the towering geolgical offering to the gods above me. one could never hope to see mountains suck as what i was seeing right then.they stones beconed to the hazzy moon wimsically dancing in the sky. i teared up again, the love, the energy, the pulsating life inside all of us. i couldent take it. or rather i could take it. all to well infact.
china rider closed out the last set amazingly well. rockin and rippen all over the rocks. rider at leased was a given considering where we where. as phil sang "id hine my light through the cool colorado rain" the entire place exploded one more time. phil thanked the crowd for being apart of somthing very special. he intrudeced the band and explained how "this place, really pulls it out of us" not fade away was the encore and i cannot think of a more beautiful song to end suck an awh ispireing evening.
phil placed his hads together in prayer and bowed to the crowed one last time in thanks.
thank you phil i love you more than words can tell
My love is real, not fade away. :gdicon:
 thanks for reading

i love reading great detailed reviews, and you did a hell of a job. i caught phil at the sb bowl and it was a hell of a night. the band started out pretty slow with larry/jackie seeming to be "battling" rather than playing together. but they picked it up with a kickass sugaree and the cold rain and snow 2nd set opener was unbelievable.
i'm listening to the acoustic set at the rocks, and in your shroomy world it must have been one of those this is too amazing of a feeling feelings. sometimes at shows i don't know what to do with the bliss at some moments, just feels like there's too much energy.
but anyway, glad you had phun with phil

Thursday 4:00 pm, 10/04/07
After I passed the liquor store and came out holding a pint of the squeakiest clean whiskey, a couple gallons of new belgiums finest and 6 pack of beer so boring only the Amish could of made it, I had all my loose ends taken care of and I pulled off the farm, I was 8 hours away from Chicago and I had 28 hours until the show so I decided to head out and see some friends on my way. I started off on the back-roads, puffing a number and taking my time, isolated showers followed me for the first two hours. I live about 60 miles from any interstate and in the direction I was heading I had about 90 miles to go before I hit i-35.
It was 8 o'clock when I arrived in Urbandale and ran to good ol' suzy q's, the best working class bar in town. I met up with a few girls I've known since I was 5 years old, we have a long, interesting history. We played darts, I was humiliated and switched to whiskey as if the dart game wasn't bad enough they witches decided they'd drag me to a club. I spent my time conning single, swinger moms into buying me drinks then telling them to get lost, it got really rowdy and it was a strange start to a weekend that was supposed to take place in Chicago.
I awoke the next morning cursing my choice of whiskey, I had gotten 5 hours of sleep and the friends kids were awake, I was not going back to bed. After a few quick good-byes, I walked down to a diner, grabbed a Des Moines Register and ordered a table full of food and coffee. A good hour of trucker gibberish, Iowa news and weak coffee had me feeling pretty good about this next 300 some miles to chicagoland. .....
I got on the road and the bearings started to drop, as I was in the middle of some gov't mule insanity the bladder started to act up, a rest stop was just ahead. As I got out I was completely knocked out, in Iowa, unlike say Illinois we take care of our rest areas and they aren't full of graffiti and such. They have titles and interesting facts as if you could learn something there, this one was called PATCHWORK QUILT. They explain the symbols and what they stand for and the grounds looks like a greens-keeper takes care of it. I spent an hour here writing and drawing away the fog that was still lingering in my head. Shortly after I crossed the Mississippi and went blind, they only thing I could think of was, Chi-town, Chicagoland, CHICAGO. I put on Son Seals and tried to forget I was aiming to hit heavy traffic at the wrong time on Friday.
I received a few breaks as I entered Chicago, I missed an on-ramp and it actually took me around a heavy contrusction zone, it was pretty handy. I got on the phone with K_C and we assumed I'd show up an hour before him and to go ahead and go to our meeting spot. My head was in the clouds and my city driving was rusty, we wound up arriving at nearly the same time. There was a cranked up Jew waiting on the street for us. I wish I had a tape recorder of the conversation that ensued, it was astounding. We sipped drinks and puffed nugs, my sleep meter was low and I didn't care. We rolled into the show fairly sober, considering the possibilities.
Set 1: Deal, Mississippi 1/2 Step, Deep Elem Blues, Loose Lucy, When You're Walking Away, Cumberland Blues, Tell Me Baby, Cold Rain & Snow
Set 2: Cosmic Charlie, Chinacat Sunflower, Eyes Of The World, St. Stephen, Millenium Jam, Mountains Of The Moon, Midnight Rider, I Know You Rider, Golden Road, Sugar Magnolia, E: Tom Thumbs Blues
The music was extremely good, the venue, although nice was extremely hot, what the fuck is it doing 90 degrees in Chicago in October?
The next day I started off with brownie that was seriously so strong it was starting to irritate me, I hadn't planned on loosing my marbles at breakfast, at the start of a long day. So what though? We spent most of the day relaxed untill we went to a secret bar-b-q where viles and fine cigarettes were passed openly. The night was underway and it's still to crazy for me to remember it all right now.
Set 1: Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, Pride Of Cucamonga, Wheels On Fire, Scarlet Begonias, Wild And Free, Althea, Tell Me Baby, Bertha
Set 2: Playing In The Band, Uncle John's Band, Birdsong, Loan Me A Diamond, Dark Star, New Speedway Boogie, Fire On The Mountain, Dark Star, Viola Lee Blues, E: Alabama Getaway
Another fine show, but I believe the ticket tearing method had a mother load of people sneaking in, I had trouble getting around but that could of been one of those molecules rolling around my head.
I decided to pull out before Sundays show, I just felt like I had enough, I already regret it.....
Set 1: Good Lovin', Mexican Girl, Candyman, Let It Ride, Sugaree > Casey Jones
Set 2: Ripple, I Know I'll See You Again, Friend of the Devil, instrumental, Brokedown Palace
Set 3: The Wheel, Cryptical Envelopment, All Along the Watchtower, Other One, Help on the Way, Slipknot > Franklin's Tower, Lovelight, E: Not Fade Away
Comment: 2nd set was acoustic with Phil on upright bass. Lineup: Phil Lesh - Bass, Vocals; John Molo - drums; Jackie Green - Guitar, Vocals
Who the fuck could be happy about missing that?
