hello,
I'm a total beginner to collecting mushrooms and have bought a new place with a lot of property, lots of mushrooms everywhere. I'm particularily interested in the Amanitas because I think I have them all over my place.
I've been noticing a particular kind and am anxious to make a positive ID. I've bought a field guide and done tons of reading but I'd like for some experts to aggree with me.
I believe the mushrooms I've found are Amanita Muscaria var. guessowii , I live in NE Canada.
Any help would be much appreciated because these things are so hard to put a positive ID on them.
The pictures are all of the same species at different stages of growth , hope this helps.
Habitat - mostly under pine trees but some out in the open.
Gills - white , crowded , unattached to the stem.
Stem - white, bulbous
Cap - orange , red in the center
Spore Print - White
Bruising - no color after bruising
Location - NE ontario in Canada

Your pic file can't be found, but according to your description, it sounds like Amanita muscaria. WARNING!!! POISONOUS WITH TYPE 3 TOXINS!!! I don't recommend eating because toxicity can very greatly from region to region.

use imageshack.us. Zips and rars have a tendency to not work after downloading from this board (for me, at least).

Yep, that's pretty ify stuff. At first glance, I see perfect A. muscaria var. formosa, then, I'm not so sure I like that one that lies right in the center of the box. Really not worth anything (beside the beauty of it), IMHO.

The first one is some type of A. muscaria, but many of the others are lacking the concentric rings on the bulb, meaning they are not A. muscaria but another species.
The second picture is probably Amanita flavoconia, a species with unknown edibility.

thanks for all the quick replies,
really like this sport ,
so I guess it's possible for different varieties of this amanita species to grow in the same little area ?
these guys were all under the same 2 trees

ooey
I'm gettin confused with these Amanita posts, so I'll reiterate my last post. I will agree that the mushrooms growing in a small area suggests they all may belong to the same "family", but this is ultimately an assumption you will be staking your health on. Do a good bit of reading about amanita and it's effects, then decide if you want to eat them.
