Jerry had his good days, and his bad ones. There are lots of other good bands out there besides the Grateful Dead that are actually playing music still, or aren't dead. Ever listen to String Cheese Incident? Their concerts have more energy than a nuclear bomb, you will never find anything as joyful as walking in to 10000 glowsticks being thrown by 10000 happy ass people, and they rock out a bright and wonderous opening tune.
Music is great, and so is weed. Expand.

i fucking love the dead!
i remember when i first started listening to them i was like.. these guys are nothing but a bunch of burnt out acid eating hippies. but they grew on me, slowly but surely. especially after i heard a bunch of their live shows on acid and read the electric kool aid acid test. now i love em. they're essential for lsd trips. just perfect. <3
one of my favorite live shows i've been listening to lately is this one: http://www.archive.org/details/gd67-11-10.sbd.sacks.1612.sbeok.shnf
it even has a neal cassady rap!

It took me a while to get into them as well. When i first listened to the dead i could not for the life of me understand why anyone would enjoy this music. My attitude towards them changed greatly over time and now they are one of my favorite bands. Listen to the europe 72' live cd set, thats got some great tracks and it's easy to find. For more obscure live shows as well as TONS of shows by other great bands check out Live Music Archive Great ratdog and phil & friends shows on there too. Allong with disco biscuits, string cheese, widespread, and sooo much more. really its an amazing resource

It seems alot of the people here have the same story. In the begging a few years back i thought the dead were pretty bad to be honest. Then after a few months or so I realized that whenever you need to relax, have a good time, forget about some stupid stuff, put on the dead and you are home free
P.S. First post, been here awhile but i never got around to making account

I was at the deads last show, I cried most def.
I also was at string cheeses last show, I cried harder.
I'm telling you Cheese is the New Dead, just start a show on number 1, get a doobie, sit back, and be taken away.

I have never listened to a grateful dead show that was sub par unless it was before 1970. They were just a jammy folk band before then. Some great shows and shows that I dont keep.
Jerry didnt have bad days, unless you want to be an annoying critic type.
I have never heard a show after 1970 that didnt get to me. It was all good, and some are better than others. SCI is by far not a favorite band of mine. Im a jazz musician, and prefer phish and dead over most "jam bands".
One of the ugliest things I have ever heard was string cheese trying to play Hancocks "chameleon".
I dont compare phish to the dead, and I sure as hell would not compare the the "cheese" to the Dead musically.
Lots of "heads" here though, for sure.
I may be a phish head or a dead head, though im not a huge fan of jam bands.

you can't honestly say jerry never had a bad day with a straight face can you? there were plenty of shows that they sounded like utter SHIT, this coming from a big fan. they were either too spun to play or too tired from the last three nights of shows and partying; either way there were many times when they played like crap. every band has their off nights, its kinda naive to say that every show was amazing.

i never saw the dead, and never saw a jam band live till 2 months ago at the Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash (at sunshine daydream music park) and i was blown away.. my experience was amazing... the bands played all night and i experienced them from center stage, looking down on all the lights from up the hill, and the Best, sitting in front of the tent listening to the music echo off the surrounding hills (it was in the mountains)
From that point i decided that i liked jam bands live, im a raver at heart, but there is something about a jam band and LSD that is different from a rave and LDS... of course whenever i take LSD it feels like coming home.

Yes, the Dead did jam, but the dead had an even greater edge, riding on the crest of the LSD wave.
Jerry's habit created such an unsteady enviroment, most were surprised to see them last as long, but it's all Jerry knew, his music. The lifestyle of the Dead was just one that we all have, good tunes, good weed, good dose, good company, good times. It's all what we want, and Jerry displayed that greatly in his music. That's why, on his good nights, he could break your heart. Then take the same song, diferent show, as said the third night perhaps, second set, and hes damned tired and strung out. It's not always, but it's there, he turned his guitar down so low MANY shows latter on, that you couldn't even hear him. Heroin is bad.
I'm just saying, Phish, is not any way compared to the Dead, jamming or otherwise. Trey has that nonstop jazz-energy combo, with Fishman on the constant groove, jazz style also.
The Dead always had just rockin percussion, and psychadelic overtones, and Jerry. Not as complex or up-beat as Phish, but with heart.
That's why I say Cheese is more like them than any. Have you ever heard the Phil Lesh shows with most of the Cheese members as friends? At Red rocks or Such? That is the most sounding Un-Dead music ever, even better than Ratdog I think.
Ever Been to a Cheese show? The lot is more like a dead show than anythign besides Panic, I promise. Fun, hula hoops and a shakedown, where grilled cheeses are 1$, and beer (Sierra Nevada) are 2 for 5$.
I know the lifestyle, living on tour, following to a new show just to find your friends from the last' or last tour. It's the whole 'hippie', Greatful Dead, lifestyle, just a newer generation. Lots of bands have this, but theirs is drug fueled. This is fueled by Love, straight up love for this band.
I don't know why people can't get over popularity and understand emotion, and what is best for them.
Sorry to go off, I just love music, and this is a big part of me.

Now that makes a band kick ass! (I hate those cookie cutter hippy shits.)
Jesus christ people. That is not a reflection of how amazing any given band is.
Seriously, I do do like cheese.
Im just kidding. ScI Is a great band. There is no doubt about that fact. Their drummer has some really trippy shit to say in interviews....lol
Most of these jam bands are really fun to listen to. Only so many have stuff id take back home and listen to on tape, or CD.
Id suggest grant green or art pepper to any phish fan, but that doesnt make my recommendations more important than those who would recommend "modest mouse". A band I really dont like for a variety of reasons.
Im not a critic. Im not that stupid. I know what I enjoy, and I hate critics.
Like those shitty phish fans who didnt like round room and talk shit about it. I guess it just takes a musician to understand what im saying.
Round room was an amazing album.
I dont listen to string cheese but have seen them many times in my past. That has nothing to do with how great they really are.
I just have too much goods to listen to.
Moe is a great band, but I just have too much to listen to. I dont see my self ever listening to moe ever again.
I do have my phish, my G dead, *reconstruction*, LOM, garcia- band, grisman/garcia, "the dead"(with some crazy guitar work by a certain almond brothers member).
Phishhook.com bitches.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
I dont like jam bands, I like good bands.

Just as long as we are all so passionate about music to bleed out on these forums for everyone makes us all close pals in my book.
It's like we can all argue the finer points, but what's important is we are all on the same page. Good music.
That is what music is about.

o shit! i was so stoned i forgot i created this thread, at first i thought i had just stumbled apon a 2 page long thread that was started by someone with a very similar member name to me who also loved the dead, lol,
good to see so many dead heads in here, and i do agree that jerry had some days that were worse then others but i wouldint say he was really bad, shit the man toured for 30 years straight with every GD loving hippie thinking of him like a god, the presure just got to him in the end i guess,
its really to bad that he ruined himself with heroin, i would have loved to have met him and givin him a hug, haha,

Im not sure how many of you know how closely tied the Grateful dead were with LSD's first days. The Grateful Dead were originaly the Warlocks and performed at Ken Kesey's "Acid Tests", original parties shortly after LSD hit the streets to encourage all americans to try acid. Ken Kesey ended up writing one flew over the cuckoos nest.

and Sometimes A Great Notion. but yea the dead were playing in pizza joints and small venues where they werent even paid for the most part so when they did the acid tests it was like woa these guys are fucking magic. if you read electric kool-aid theres some interesting bits about the pranksters interactions with the dead, i forget the guys name but this one dude who had one of the tests at his house actually went up to jerry and asked him to pay some rent money for the place LOL. he said something allong the lines of "well you already blew 3 fuses in this place" ha. what i would've given to been there, complete sensory overload of art, music, spoken word, video, everything. What better music then the grateful dead? except for when they themselves became so spun that they just made odd noises emanate from the speakers rather than songs.
