I noticed this the other day, it is spreading In my opinion I am going to have to operate to save it. Anyone have any tips before I begin?

black weeping rot. dont underestimate your cactus, it could survive this infection, then again it might not...
dont water it, make sure its in as dry a place as possible... perform surgery if u feel its really necessary, but remember that an open wound is just as likely to attract more nasties into your plant...

I think you need to cut that out man...
Def. if it's soft...
The base will pup and the tip will continue to grow if you replant it...
Unless rot extends all the way up the column...
BTW, I've sliced MANY cacti and have never had one rot on the cut...

yes, it is soft. Would the best method be to slice above and below the wound, making two different pieces or to actually "cut out" the infection? I'm guessing the first choice would be the cleanest/safest... thanks for the quick responses.

Yes.
Allow the top peice to callouse over in a dry room, with a fan blowing on it(like CPW said)
After a few weeks you can then root it and it will continue to grow...
The base will pup.
Then you have 2-3 cacti instead of one!

I would just cut out the infection with a razor blade. Cut shallowly first and a little more and a little more until all infected tissue has been removed. Then place with an electric fan blowing on it for a couple days.
Cutting the cactus into separate pieces seems unnecessary and wasteful if you plan on throwing out the portion with the rot. It seems easily salvageable.

the cactus seems a bit thin. removing just the infected area might leave it unstable as the tip gains weight. what is the actual girth and how far from the tip is the infected area?
