Question for those who hand-fan their terrarium
    #7479823 - 10/03/07 06:12 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all. I have a question for those who hand-fan their terrarium to provide air-exchange. I'd like to know if you necessarily sterilize the air with something like Lysol every time you fan the terrarium. I ask because this simultaneously seems like it wouldn't work so well (since it's hard to sterilize an entire room even if you spray to death), and also because I think that it may be unnecessary, seeing how resistant newish cakes seem to be to contams.

But where it's most important, and where my question really lies, is when one wants to make a sterile print. I'm wondering whether it's likely or unlikely that a sterile print can be obtained if there is fanning without pre-sterilization. It seems to me that a hand-fanned terrarium would be more likely to have contaminated prints, since not-so-clean air blows over the mushrooms, including the caps.

Or, better yet, for those who hand-fan their terrariums, how do you maximize the likelihood of getting a sterile print? Do you stop fanning once the caps start to open?

Many thanks guys and gals!

This is actually a very good question. It wouldnt hurt to sterilise the air, but is probably overkill as the your developed mycelium should be able to fight of contams.

You would have to be carefull that lysol not get into ur fruiting chamber as this could possibly cause mutation or at least some bruising.

Probably oust would be better, but dont think its entirely nessesary. and doing it everytime u fan would be a pain in the ass.

As for getting a sterile print this brings up a good point.

Anyone else have any usefull information on this?

Generally speaking, sterilization is thrown out the window after birth, as there is NO WAY to sterilize the air in your house!

A hepa filter and frequent cleaning is about all you can do.

My foaf sprayed the area with straight isopropyl, to assure that at least the surfaces are covered with a sterilizing agent.

But really, don't try to be sterile after birth, it's impossible!

It's highly unlikely that a mold spore or whatever is gonna get stuck in the gills of a shroom...especially if it's veil just broke. Maybe if you were growing some mold near your fc...

If you're worried about it, use a peroxide mix when you mist and keep the fc a few feet off the ground, at least when your fan. Somethin like 90% of contaminates are within 1 foot of the ground. That's where everything sinks and settles.

Then, of course, use a glove box and be sterile, when printing.
