Sorcerous Manifesto
    #747961 - 07/15/02 12:43 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

*********

THE UNIVERSE WANTS TO PLAY. Those who refuse out of dry spiritual greed & choose pure contemplation forfeit their humanity -- those who refuse out of dull anguish, those who hesitate, lose their chance at divinity -- those who mold themselves blind masks of Ideas & thrash around seeking some proof of their own solidity end by seeing out of dead men's eyes.

Sorcery: the systematic cultivation of enhanced consciousness or non-ordinary awareness & its deployment in the world of deeds & objects to bring about desired results.

The incremental openings of perception gradually banish the false selves, our cacophonous ghosts -- the "black magic" of envy & vendetta backfires because Desire cannot be forced. Where our knowledge of beauty harmonizes with the ludus naturae, sorcery begins.

No, not spoon-bending or horoscopy, not the Golden Dawn or make-believe shamanism, alien abduction, astral projection or the Satanic Mass -- if it's mumbo jumbo you want go for the real stuff, banking, politics, social science -- not that weak blavatskian crap.

Sorcery works at creating around itself a psychic/physical space or openings into a space of untrammeled expression -- the metamorphosis of quotidian place into angelic sphere. This involves the manipulation of symbols (which are also things) & of people (who are also symbolic) -- the archetypes supply a vocabulary for this process & therefore are treated as if they were both real & unreal, like words.

The sorcerer is a Simple Realist: the world is real -- but then so must consciousness be real since its effects are so tangible. The dullard finds even wine tasteless but the sorcerer can be intoxicated by the mere sight of water. Quality of perception defines the world of intoxication -- but to sustain it & expand it to include others demands activity of a certain kind -- sorcery. Sorcery breaks no law of nature because there is no Natural Law, only the spontaneity of natura naturans, the tao. Sorcery violates laws which seek to chain this flow -- priests, kings, hierophants, mystics, scientists & shopkeepers all brand the sorcerer enemy for threatening the power of their charade, the tensile strength of their illusory web.

A poem can act as a spell & vice versa -- but sorcery refuses to be a metaphor for mere literature -- it insists that symbols must cause events as well as private epiphanies. It is not a critique but a re-making. It rejects all eschatology & metaphysics of removal, all bleary nostalgia & strident futurismo, in favor of a paroxysm or seizure of presence.

Incense & crystal, dagger & sword, wand, robes, rum, cigars, candles, herbs like dried dreams -- the virgin boy staring into a bowl of ink -- wine & ganja, meat, yantras & gestures -- rituals of pleasure, the garden of houris & sakis -- the sorcerer climbs these snakes & ladders to a moment which is fully saturated with its own color, where mountains are mountains & trees are trees, where the body becomes all time, the beloved all space.

The tactics of ontological anarchism are rooted in this secret Art -- the goals of ontological anarchism appear in its flowering. Chaos hexes its enemies & rewards its devotees...this strange yellowing pamphlet, pseudonymous & dust-stained, reveals all...send away for one split second of eternity.

I was going to tear you to pieces, Landotter, until I realized that we are, in some ways, kindred spirits.
You appear to not beleive in magic, in the traditional, common usage of the word.
You seem to believe that man has the power to take charge of his reality- I agree as long as it is the part of reality that can and should be controlled, like the intoxication thing.
I believe certain mental expereinces can be willed into the psyche, but not that anything physical can be controlled by spiritual means.
You have a lust for life. Good. The only thing I would request is less jargon, or more explanations. Not that I didn't enjoy your style. It was a good style, just made me draw a blank in spots.

I was going to tear you to pieces, Landotter, until I realized that we are, in some ways, kindred spirits.

That's nice.

You appear to not beleive in magic, in the traditional, common usage of the word.

Indeed, I never even used the word. You are correct sir, I do not believe in magic. The word used was sorcery, and, though the line may be blurred between the two, they are quite different things. For one thing, the sorcerer requires objective results. Read it again.

You seem to believe that man has the power to take charge of his reality- I agree as long as it is the part of reality that can and should be controlled, like the intoxication thing.

I agree, but would like to point out that the point of sorcery is to expand the definition of such terms, to expand reality itself. And the hard part of sorcery is walking the fine line between the actual accumulation of power(s) and the delusion that one is doing so. Many of the things I have accomplished still mystify me, but I am forced to accede them some reality, since I can point to them and ask myself "well, what about that?" I will also be the first to admit that I have erred on either side of that fine line a couple of times at least!

I believe certain mental expereinces can be willed into the psyche, but not that anything physical can be controlled by spiritual means.

Ok. I believe (such a strong word!) that there is essentially no difference between the physical and the spiritual... and all that that leads to.

The only thing I would request is less jargon, or more explanations.

Oh no, that would be telling. Words are crap anyway ... I may have a way with em but that doesn't mean they're adequate! Nice tools ... pity they fuzz reality up so much.

Not that I didn't enjoy your style. It was a good style, just made me draw a blank in spots.

Sorry. Read it again.

What have YOU personally accomplished by following these tenets?

In no particular order...

I have engineered for myself a life rich with meaning and significance, Swami. I have learned to have fun. I treat small things v. seriously and large things somewhat less seriously. I've been kicked out of England. Each morning is a new and heady brew of possibilities. I enjoy many rewarding, pleasant and sometimes challenging relationships. Mystery and wonder. I live in pure, diamond-crusted awe. I have written a lovely book and produced frightening art. I have taken dictation for something beyond my self. I have felt the death of loved ones at great distances. I have things now that cannot be taken away. I have intentionally sculpted my life, which is more than can be said for most folks.

Will you share with me the things you have accomplished by following your tenets, Swami?

The Tao's principle is spontaneity. - Lao-tzu

Once the spirit arises in you and the veil of the ego is dropped, all of lifes wonders truly show themselves. By allowing the spirit to guide you without dogma, without shame, or self reflection you have enabled the controls to the greatest roller coaster ride of them all. And that is living free.

Thanks for your words landlotter. Truly refreshing.

Very enlightening post, although verbose. You are right though, words can't really do justice to what you are explaning.

i find your words poetic and intriguing, and your ideas (from what i understand) practical and even inspiring. i do intend to read your book, although i haven't gotten around to it yet (there are a lot of books out there, you know). however, i think perhaps there is something i'm missing. i was wondering if you could just humor me for a little.. what would your response be to this poem by william blake..

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

how useful is controlling perception if you're being ripped to shreds?

do you consider the idea of "escaping from prison" a moot point if you really can't even see the walls, only speculate that they're there somewhere, waiting to be scaled?

is one's preparation for death dependent not on truth or "understanding", but rather, solely on actions? is preparing for death even an issue to you?

am i misunderstanding you? do i make any sense to anyone but myself? does it even matter? do any of these questions matter, or is the best choice just to "go with the flow"? and if so, well, i direct you back to my first question..

just a curious little amoeba with many questions...

i find your words poetic and intriguing

Not my words as you've found out but thanks anyway. I don't own the words but somewhow I don't think Mr. Bey feels he owns them either so I freely disseminate when appropriate.

i do intend to read your book, although i haven't gotten around to it yet

You will have a little while to wait yet as it is not yet published and the house I sent it to is taking it's sweet time...

what would your response be to this poem by william blake

The tiger is the tao. Never perceived fully, impossible to grasp, tearing you out of your car and reducing you to bits on the wet tarmac, yes? You are also the tiger.

how useful is controlling perception if you're being ripped to shreds?

Not useful at all but at the v. least it will allow you to be fully present while the tiger has his little feast. Have you ever heard of the Chod Ritual of the Bon-po shamans of Tibet? While in deep meditation the shaman remains calmly contemplative as hideous demons tear him limb from limb and devour him. The point of it is to realize that you are not your body.

do you consider the idea of "escaping from prison" a moot point if you really can't even see the walls, only speculate that they're there somewhere, waiting to be scaled?

The bars of our prisons are installed by ourselves and we are trained to like it. Why? I would like to choose my prison, is all ... a deliberately beautiful life is hardly a prison, despite the fact that someday escape from it will be inevitable and even necessary.

is one's preparation for death dependent not on truth or "understanding", but rather, solely on actions? is preparing for death even an issue to you?

I have few thoughts on this matter. What can one really do to prepare, except try to understand? Or, failing that, accept that understanding the unknown may be impossible and one will just have to wait and see?

I like to think that each of us is a Word, whose pronunciation begins at birth and is complete at the moment of death and then entered in the Book of Life (or, the record of Life and consciousness in the Universe). What will I mean when my Word is spoken finally? When it is read, what associations will arise in the mind of the reader? So, as far as preparing for Death, I think it is more a continual preparation and fulfillment of Life that is more important - sculpt and craft each moment, be constantly aware of your actions, mindfulness, attention, intention... so that your eventual Word may be a nice one.

Like 'yogurt'. Or 'panapoly'. Or 'love'.

am i misunderstanding you?

Probably.

do i make any sense to anyone but myself?

We are the testing ground for our own sensibility. Test these questions in the furnace of yourself and then take them out into the world. Steel sharpens steel, my friend.

does it even matter? do any of these questions matter, or is the best choice just to "go with the flow"? and if so, well, i direct you back to my first question..

We always have a choice and the choice always matters. What do you need to do? Do it. Hesitate and lose.

This book of yours, is it online?

Nope, it's on paper. It is also "in the pipeline", as my publisher likes to put it. And I should qualify my earlier statements re: it's loveliness. When I say its 'lovely' I mean its 'crap' but its my crap, and I am therefore fond and a little proud...

what would your response be to this poem by william blake

Since you took the time to post an entire poem Amoeba, I will respond to this by posting an excerpt from the short story "Teddy" by J D Salinger...

***

Answer Professor Mandell's letter when you get a chance and the patience. Ask him not to send me any more poetry books. I already have enough for 1 year anyway. I am quite sick of it anyway. A man walks along a beach and unfortuneately gets hit in the head by a cocoanut. His head unfortuneately cracks open in two halves. Then his wife comes along the beach singing a song and sees the 2 halves and recognizes them and picks them up. She gets very sad of course and cries heart breakingly. That is exactly where I am tired of poetry. Supposing the lady just picks up the 2 halves and shouts into them very angrily "Stop that!" Do not mention this when you answer his letter, however. It is quite controversial and Mrs. Mandell is a poet besides.

***

Nuff said!
