VOTING THREAD IN PROGRESS! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7635888/an/0/page/0
Hello and welcome to the Tenth Composition Contest! I've had a great time putting this on. (and also gained quite a bit of experience) I want to thank everyone who votes, gives feedback and participates in this contest.
I wanted to do something special for the 10th anniversary, so what better way then scoring some moving picture for the first time!
Instructions: *Contestants will download THIS http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=7B40E8A050D6C60B) video clip and write a working score with the clip. *Don't worry about not having music software. Just play as best as you can with the video and I will merge the audio and video. *Get creative. You may add vocals and sound effects. If anyones interested in a free high quality sound libraries, please inquire in this thread or via PM. *Submit your files to xxxx with the following information: Username, title of the work and any special notes on sync points. *At the end of the contest, a voting thread will be created and the videos will be posted in the order I receive them in my email. The community will then vote for the best score.
Remember, you don't need to be John Williams to take part in this! This clip welcomes all genres.
RULES: -Recording must be original and done in the time alloted. (that means no pulling out old tracks and submitting them) -Do your best to create an audio file that fits the length of the video (about 4:30) -Audio formats must be mp3. I'll take care of the merging of audio and video. (Your welcome to do this yourself, just make sure you let me know ahead of time)
There is no due date at the moment. I'm thinking somewhere around the 2-3 weeks range. I want this to be quality, non-rushed material. I also want to open this contest up for a lot of people who need more time to come up with usable material. We can discuss ending times in this thread.
good luck everyone and have fun with this! The winner may pick the next video clip. (which will be used for the 20th composition contest)

Yes, this is completely new ground for me. This was actually a fan made clip for a post rock band. It sounded pretty bad ass. I'm just starting to flesh out some interesting ideas. Really excited to really delve into this.
When I said sample library, I really meant sound library. I have a pretty decent sci-fi library I would be happy to give out to you guys. I'll upload it on here later on tonight.

i'm going to have to say poor choice of movie.
too much goes on in the movie, and the pacing of it is weird.

unless you're actually trying to sync the sound up to the video, in which case its a total pain in the ass and probably un-do-able.
edit: to clarify my bias, i use a sequencer, and i don't have a keyboard.
so right now i'm taking notes on the the various things that happen in the movie. like the monster stomps at 2:18 2:22 2:24 2:27. none of these things are exactly at those times, which makes it hell for me to find where each little piece goes.
and so much goes on in the movie, that 2 and a half minutes into it, there are already 19 events that seem like they would require sonic accompanyment, and many of them are retarded lengths of time like half a second long.
i guess i could do like the origional music that came with the video and completely ignore what goes on.
edit edit: the monster talking, and speedup and slowdown when the cannon fires, the little shit that pops up and stays around for half a second... all these things are reasons why this was a terrible choice for the first video contest. it should have been something nice and simple that changes every 30 seconds or so, not this insanity.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess your just going to have to win so you can pick the next 'good' movie clip!
You don't need to sync up the music with every hitpoint. That would be hell...especially because of the fact that this video was built around another song. It's made to play in perfect time with that post rock band.
Just hit what you can and focus on the actual feel more then the timing. I do salute you for giving this a shot with just a sequencer. Go grab a cheap midikeyboard! It would make a worthy investment.

And on the quick update, I finally found my 'theme' It's really exciting trying to bond my music with this video.
Tell you the truth, I feel like my last couple composition contest tracks have been kind of shitty. My music life has been pretty much consumed by ethnic war music. (Video game music project)
I feel like I'm stretching some new muscles and taping into some really interesting ideas while working on this video. Hope everyone else is diggin this as much as I am. Keep us up to date on your efforts in here!

I'm interested in trying to make something, but have 2 questions
1. Can I get the video that will be used for this? It has expired on yousendit
2. Would I be able to get all those samples in your collection that you speak of toddo?
Seems pretty cool. I've been out of these for awhile

the video is messed up on my machine. i tried different players, winamp, wmp, divx, all that. i even tried reconverting the video to a different format, but all i got was the audio portion and a blank movie screen. what gives?
i'm trying to redownload the file to see if there was a possible error while downloading, but i don't think that's the case. i would really like to participate in this project, but it doesn't look like theres a shot. *shrug*
[edit] nevermind. got it to open with nero showtime. neat video. who did this?
absolutely looking forward to doing this. ideas are like POW!

i'm done. got the song synced up perfectly with the video. it wasn't hard to do at all, just a lil time consuming.
no keyboard either.
turntables were also used!
hate to say it, but you guys got some SERIOUS competition comin' your way

I'm excited to see what you guys did with this.
I'll submit something for the next one; I didn't feel up to attempting this special edition contest.
