So I just fucked up a hard drive...

Well, I had this old hard drive that used to be the only disk in my system. Around 2 years ago, it got the click of death. One day it was fine, the next day, BAM! No chance to backup files, nothing.
I tried everything to get it working. I froze it. I hit it. I dropped it. Relentless clicking. I let it sit for a year. I tried the above again. Relentless clicking. I'd had enough.
So, I decided to take a screwdriver to it. Took the top screws off. Two screws wouldn't come off; they were getting stripped: one that held the platters in place, and one that attached to the arm. Well fuck be me if I didn't take the biggest screwdriver I could find, and with those two in place still, I pried open the top. Well, since the platters were still attached, they came up with the top. The arm, not so much.
Well, I finally got the top off, took the platters off, and finally got the other screw out. I completely disassembled it, none too carefully either. It's all sitting there. No evidence of malfunction. The arm moves freely, the platter spun, no cause for the notorious click of death. I always thought there would be more complicated shit inside a hard drive. Seems pretty simple (besides the components). Now, there sits the platter, on my bed, gleaming and glaring at me, as if laughing. All the good porno and music on that harddrive will be forever missed.
BTW, anybody know what causes the clicking?

At the end of the arm is a minute head that writes and reads data. If this breaks (and being so tiny, and scooting along a rapidly spinning platter it only takes a piece of dust to break it) it can't read anything on the disk, doesn't even know where on the disk it is, so the drive controller tries to swing the arm to the side and slowly move back accross the platter to find some recognisable marker.
This obviously doesn't work because the head is effectively blind, so it tries again.
Each time it swings the arm out you hear a click.
It's the sound of a blinded read head stumbling in the dark.
I'm such a geek.
To help you to come to terms with your loss, here's a fun little song about hard drive technology:
1,2,3, kick it.

get a new disk, there are people who will take the disc apart and save your data. if its really important to you, but not too cheap
