How many people here have dropped out of college?

Why did you do it? Do you now regret it? What did you do instead? If you are still fairly young (even if you're not), what are your plans for the future? Go back? Find another way to start a career?

A lot of people I have talked to from the shroomery are college drop outs. Seems to be the majority of the people here.

I dropped out of college to move where my parents moved to go work at a restaurant my dad was opening. Unfortunately, the plans fell through and I got stuck in the middle of the bayou . I came here with nothing, ive been here for nine months and I basically still have nothing. I figured my dad opening the restaurant would be a way for me to have a successful future without having to complete school.
Now I work six days a week as a fry cook at a restaurant down the road, though I cant complain much, they pay very well and its by far the best place ive ever worked. I absolutely regret dropping out now that the restaurant didnt open. I left my home, my friends and my social life behind . I'll be 21 in December and im planning on staying here until then. By that time I should have enough money to get myself a car and get back home, where my parents still own a house, and live there and go to a tech school.
I work with a guy that, before working where we work now, worked at Waffle House for 15 years! Are you fucking kidding me! He's my inspiration for getting my ass back to school. That and I just dont think I could do the whole fry cook thing for the rest of my life.

He must have a doctorate in de waffles. Yeah dude once you've had enough shitty jobs for a while you begin to appreciate being in school and what it can do for you. OR just be an entrepreneur with a shit ton of ambition, they do well for themselves

I dropped out of high school at 15 in 9th grade. Went to community college on and off after I turned 19. I must have 'dropped out' at least three times. That is, I dropped all my classes with no intention of going back.
Then when I was about 23/24 I realized that I need to do something and stick with it to get what I wanted out of life. Pizza driving and waiting tables are great sources of income but, of course, it not what you want to do for 40 years. I then found a major that suits me perfectly, and have kept with it since. I now love what I do and am looking forward to 6 more years of grad school.
College isnt for everyone for sure... but just because you drop out (even more then once) doesn't mean you need to kiss education goodbye forever. God bless America (or any other nation that supports adult education).

My worst grade was in my freshman Rhetoric class. Got a "C". Req course. And my "prof" was a fucking wanna-be cowboy "Rhetorician" (self-described).
And fuck yes I finished college.
Sort of like my roommate when I did my study abroad in England (Hull, of all places ). He said: "If you're going to do a drug, do it right." Meaning, don't take a pussy dose.
So, translate that to education--if you're going to do something, do it right. Not half-assed.

I dropped out of college, my major was boring, and for financial reasons. Im glad i did, b/c it helped me realize what i really needed to be doing with my life.

jew, are you asking this because you're thinking of dropping out? probably wouldn't be the best idea man.. unless you have something else seriously planned out and not just some half-assed idea that you'll be better off without college.
finishing school with a shitty gpa is better than not finishing at all. that's like the only fact that's remotely driving me right now.

Burned out, system was shutting down. Stress-related intestinal disease, colitis, something like that. When I got within a year of graduation my appetite basically disappeared. I went to the ER ataxic one time. The nurse thought I had a neurological problem when she saw my hand shaking.

I am starting a mush farm capable of 200lbs of King Oyster and 200lbs of blue oyster every week. I also got a PT job at UPS for insurance.

I won't go back to my old school, my profs didn't know about my health problems. I heard it through the grapevine they think I'm lazy, etc. I also moved several hours away from that town as well. UPS offers tuition reimbursement and other programs. I can get an associates in Business Administration in one of those programs. At this point my self-education is appreciating faster than any degree I could have gotten or will get in the future.

I haven't dropped out of college, but I think about it often. The people I go to school with are idiots and the professors dumb down the curriculum. It's painfully boring.
I dropped out of high school when I was 15, passed the GED test shortly after, began community college at 19. Going to school long enough to be able to do something I like is what keeps me motivated. That, and I know what the only jobs out there are for high school graduates. They aren't pretty.

Quit High School. I have regreted it some, but for the most part not at all. Just miss being around peers. Went straight to work in construction. Found a good company and stuck with it. School isn't for everyone.

I went to one year of college but dropped out when I realized I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to study. And besides, all I was doing was partying (and wasting a lot of money to do it at school). I knew I could make good money in constuction in the meantime while I figured it out (I always had a construction job, even through High School).
Two decades later and I'm still in construction. For a short time in my mid-20s I flirted with the idea of going back to school since I had figured out something that kind of interested me, but by then I saw the potential future I had in construction and was really enjoying my trade. So I stuck with it and its always been a good fit for me. I make a good living and I've always enjoyed what I do so theres nothing to regret.

I am an engineering student and currently work for a plumbing company and know a lot of people in the skilled trade business that make far more money than people with degrees. Many people would look down at this and also say that the people who make good money in construction have done it all their life, well that is the complete opposite.
Really it all boils down to whatever you find yourself compelled to do. If you like the fact that you work hard physically for your money and make a BIG difference(construction) for others(doctors) to help people with sickness and special needs out, that is what you should do, but on the other hand if you like to work hard in life with your degree behind a desk then do absolutely that.
So if anyone tells you that you have to go to college to be anything; unless you're that ONE success story, then they are completely WRONG. I plan on finishing college and continue working in construction. The sad thing is that I might not make as much money as some of the plumbers that I work with as an engineer, but I also like designing my own plans and watching my work turn into an art.

Dropped out after a semester.
I suggest just doing what you want.
My aspirations only require good money management and any ol' minimum wage job.
I have no desire to own a big house, fancy car, newest cell-phone, etc.
I hear it's best to expand your knowledge in a particular area to help you further your own goals, not for a piece of paper.

I dropped out after one semester at a University. I had no idea what I wanted to do, and like TTSummit, I was spending a lot of money trying to figure it out.
Life isn't exactly easy as a dropout, but I don't think it's necessarily much better for people with degrees. I work in construction / labor as well, and I love it. My two closest friends, both with college degrees, work as a mailroom paper pusher, and a waitress.
It's up to you.

its a fact in general that people make more money with that piece of paper.
i don't really care about all that materialistic stuff either. i just want to spend a good part of my life traveling the world, and having allot of money makes that a hell of a lot more possible.

The 'piece of paper' costs thousands (and sometimes more thousands) of dollars to acquire - and that's the conundrum.

i finished my associate, and bought a fixer upper house and an adjoining property.
the fixing up is done, and now i'm planning on going back to finish.
not sure what to go for though, its a real dillemma.
in hindsight, its hard to tell if i should have stuck with it.
i do have a ton of equity and money and shit,
but now i'm older, and i feel i missed out on college life a little.

I was suspended/dropped out of University after my first semester, lol. As much as it sucked it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. After I stepped back from the rat race and took a look at what was going on I realized that I didn't like where I was and I didn't like what I was doing. I would have went on to get a degree (quite pricey at that) in something that I had no true interest in. That was 3 years ago. I've since worked a couple of jobs here and there, hit up tour a little , and then went back to work. I took some online classes for the last 9 months or so to get me back in to the swing of things while I was making some money and I'm transferring into a state school that's pretty cool and ridiculously cheap. All in all, I've done some stupid shit, but I'm glad to be where I am today.

I almost dropped out after 2 years, but decided to take a semester dedicated to classes I actually was interested in (philosophy, neuroscience, etc)... got straight A's, met some interesting faculty, changed my major, then spent 2.5 more years and got two degrees.
Definitely ended up being a good decision as straight out of college got a job making $85k my first year.
Stick with it!

Excellent idea johnny, top bar
For going into trade school, how do you do it?
Like, who would you have to talk to, and what not, and do they let anybody in initially?
I know he had to take an exam to get into the union itself but he just sort said he was going to plumbing school one day

There are three ways to become an electrician:
1. Know somebody who runs his own business and he'll take you under his wing. The opportunities that arise are variable in this situation.
2. Go to a trade school. This is what I did. These places are pretty much scams. They will accept anybody. I was in there with borderline retarded people. You don't learn much, you goof off a lot, and the school takes a bunch of your money. That being said, it is better than having nothing. Electrical contractors will take you more seriously if they're looking for help and you might be able to fenangle your way into a decent industrial job. Is having a degree from these places better than nothing? Yes. Was it worth my time and money? No.
3. Go to the electrical worker's union. This is where you make good money. But, whereas trade schools are like 16-24 months the electrical union apprenticeship program is five years. You start out at the bottom earning crap wages. But, if you stick with it and get your journeyman's license then you'll be making $28 an hour with badass benefits and shit. Also, you will have to travel a lot. It's not unusual for work to dry up in your area and you have to travel a thousand miles to some big project to find more work. It's a hard life but if you bust your ass you will make a shitload of money. Also, the union owns your ass (especially during your apprenticeship) because they are paying for your schooling. If they catch you doing non-union work or not doing what they want you to do they'll kick you out. If you're willing to deal with them telling you what to do for five years, you're willing to travel, and you're willing to work hard then the union is the way to go. The union by far offers the best electrical training that you could ever get.
Oh another thing...you will never make money working for someone else doing residential work. That's the bottom of the barrel. Those guys only make like $7-$8 an hour.

Second time I dropped out: Financial reasons AND I had some issues with the direction the counseling emphasis Psychology major program was pointing towards. I'm not big on mental illness being defined as a "disease," and so I disagreed with my textbooks AND my professors.

Not a bit. It was a great decision both times, and I would not do it differently.

What did you do instead?
Went to work as an Administrative Assistant the first time around. This was a great decision, as I learned the basic skills that would keep me out of the minimum wage trap.
Went to work as an Accounting Assistant the second time around. This was also a great decision, as I learned all the skills that enabled me to start my own bookkeeping service.

I did three years of electrical engineering at college.
It would have been a two year course, except one of the tutors quit due to alcoholism, a new one wasn't found untill july, so I lost out on a year then, who was a drunk but found jesus to be a lot cheaper.
After three years I learnt that 415v+booze do not mix well and that MCB's are your friend (Micro circuit breakers saved my life). My classmates where either dole cheats who did the course as it was free, or junkies, or both. Back then I really liked booze.
I didn't want to do electrical engineering, despite doing really well on the knowledge and practical aspects (when not so drunk or high) I wanted to do mechanical engineering. My dad didn't want me to because he didn't want me to get in the bad crowd. If anything, the mechanical engineering students were all 16 year old school leavers who all had BMW coveralls on, all clean cut, all boring.
I miss those days. Donuts, bud, beer, and I learnt some pretty useful stuff too.

1) I dropped out/didn't get my qualification because the course was canceled, the government subsidy dried out, and my work was lost. There was no sense of urgency there. Half the time was spent working, the other half was spent in the pub.
2) I regret that I'm going nowhere fast. I don't regret not passing.
3) Became self employed building and fixing computers, something I fortunately have a good reputation for as I know what I'm doing, and I do what I know well.
4) Computers doesn't bring me much income. I even got a qualification from cisco which wasn't hard (as my classmates were boring, thus no drugs) and passed with distinctions. I wanted a piece of paper to say "Yes, I can do this" I also wanted to go back to college because it was cheaper than paying rent. My plan is to get qualified as a massage therapist, and offer my service as such. It's not hard, customer satisfaction is good, and the going rate is enough that I can charge £25 per hour.
