The simplest things... *updated - pics*
    #7478733 - 10/02/07 08:48 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

...provide me the most amusement.

I just watched the ISS (International Space Station) fly over. I've seen it many times and it never gets old. I don't know why. It is just always so fascinating to me to think that some astronauts/cosmonauts are up there floating around doing their thing, whatever that may be. Maybe one of them is looking down at me right at that moment. Who knows?

You should take the chance to see it (on purpose) at least once. Its nothing spectacular to behold, just a solid point of light moving ever so silently across the sky. But it still captivates me every time.

It will pass over Southern California again tomorrow evening just after 7:30. Should be able to see it from any SoCal location. It will be nearly as bright as Jupiter so spotting it will be easy even from cities. Jupiter can be seen after sunset as the brightest object in the Southern sky. Start watching the sky around 7:30. The ISS will come up in the Southwest, travel across the sky, and set in the Northeast. If you haven't seen it by 7:40 then you missed it. I may go out and take some pics of it tomorrow night just for kicks.

And if you are not in SoCal you can easily find out when it will pass over your locale. Go to the Heavans Above website to get info on tracking the ISS as well as many other satellites (and also the Space Shuttle when it is in orbit). Its a good resource for any amateur stargazer.

So keep your eyes on the stars my Shroomery friends, you never know what you may see!

Bump.
Just a reminder to SoCal residents. You got one hour. I'll be back later with pics if I get any.

Doesn't seem like one of the simplest things to me.

I think it's complexity is what amazes me. How much time, effort, thought, calculations went into that station. And how much effort just to keep it going around.

but it's the little thing to notice that in your own busy little world; to notice that little white light in the sky, and to stop, and to just stare, mesmorized, and to dream and fascinate...

it's a simple moment admiring the beauties of creation

Maybe you're right. But from my perspective its just a bland, unwavering point of light passing silently across the sky. Simple from my point of view, but complex as anything man has created when you think about it.

Oh yeah, I always see the random satellites/space station passing in the sky.  You can tell by its steady movement in the night sky.  Always very cool when I do see them.

Nice post!

I know what you mean; I do the same thing with abandoned buildings: The enjoyment and feeling of the zeitgeist at something that brings your mind elsewhere.

There is a whole universe of complexity and simplicity no matter where you may be.

I moved out to the country so the sky is very clear at night. I can always catch a few satellites within minutes of being outside. Iridium satellites are the coolest when they catch a good glare and get super bright all of a sudden.

OK, heres pics from tonights fly-by.

This first shot is of the OB Pier while I was waiting. Although it looked almost completely dark to the naked eye the time exposure captured the last hints of fading twilight. Jupiter is at the top and there are 2 different airplanes passing through the picture. This was a 20 second exposure.

This was the first pic of the ISS. It was not at full brightness yet as it climbed up from the horizon. Jupiter is the bright point to the left. 20 second exposure.

This was the second pic of the ISS. Getting brighter as It got high in the sky. Also happened to capture a plane that was flying through the frame. Kinda cool. 20 second exposure.

This was the last pic I got. It was almost directly overhead and easily as bright as Jupiter by this point. You can see I was sitting next to a lifegaurd tower. 30 second exposure.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that each shot has a bit of 'wobble' at the start. This is due to my hand on the camera releasing the shutter (even though the camera was on a tripod). I should've used the timed release to eliminate that. But when you are trying to capture something like this there is no time to fuck around so I didn't bother. It was a trick just to get these 3 pics during a single fly-by. The entire event lasts just a few minutes.
