Bottom of substrate not colonizing?
    #7478644 - 10/02/07 08:15 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have a coco coir substrate that I spawned to 12 days ago. According to the guide it should be fully colonized by now. However only the top half is fully colonized at this point. It's about 4" thick, coco coir, blood meal and gypsum all mixed to proper proportions in a plastic 4qt tub. I'm sure the moisture level is correct as well. The temp has been around 83.6. My spawn ratio was 1:4. No apparent contams either.

So my question is: Is it alright to go ahead and case it or should I wait perhaps another week to see if it colonizes further?

Thanks for any help.

I would say wait til it's fully colonized, and make sure you mix up your spawn/substrate better next time. I think it's usual for there to be a bit uncolonized at the bottom when casing goes on, since it will finish as the casing layer colonizes, but half seems like a lot.

Usually, a bottom casing layer is not needed, but if you are asking when to fruit that tray, the answer is, when the top casing layer is nearly fully, and evenly colonized.
