lycoperdon perlatum and Lycoperdon pyriforme, Help Id?
    #7478523 - 10/02/07 07:23 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Here are some varietys of puffballs i found growing around my house, i did some research and this is what i narrowed it down to.

lycoperdon pyriforme or Pear-shaped puffball

notice the Rhizomes on the end of these, also the middle spore mass has not turned yellow and inedible yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

lycoperdon perlatum or gemmed puffball

Also notice the rhizomes on these specimens, and the white edible spore mass. The spines also came off easily like they should on this kind of mushroom, if you picked it up they would easily rub off.

Well, what do you think? This is my second time trying to ID edible gourmet mushrooms, my first was some Cantharellus Cibarius in the deep woods. These were around my house! If anybody has any info or anything so if it is them i can get the butter and the frying pan and saute them up ha.

*EDIT* sorry i didnt know you could upload pics straight to this site.. which is also something cool, pics are now there! thanks.

I won't open offsite images so didn't see yours. I like puffballs right past the pin stage when they're still small. They're pretty common now, and we get a few every time we go chanterelle picking.
