sawdust vs woodchips
    #7478163 - 10/02/07 05:16 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I have access to sawdust, but no access to wood chips, at least so far. What is the limitations of growing with sawdust instead of woodchips? From what I have read sawdust can choke out and not allow enough air exchange, is this true? Can you mix something with sawdust to give it better air exchange? Anything else to be concerned with when using sawdust?

Thanks,

Cul

Adding woodchips definitely helps the blocks to hold together later. With sawdust only, I've had several blocks break in half from normal handling. Woodchips will also help ensure more than one flush. Often, sawdust alone is a one flush wonder. There has to be trees where you live. Chop up a branch or two and mix them in. Avoid pine and cedar.

Thanks RR. Def trees here, just don't have a chipper. Have to look into renting one.
