problems with new Linksys router...

I got a new linksys router today, a wireless-g one (WRT54G version 8), and set it up properly to where the software works right and it communicates with the computers... but it can't establish a connection to the internet.
i'm using an older Fujitsu DSL modem, and don't know what type of connection it uses. I've tried setting up the router to use DHCP as well as PPPoE, and neither yields any results.
I've considered getting a new modem from Verizon, but I'm told that if they send a Westell that I'd be SOL with the linksys router anyways. I spent the past few hours mucking around to no avail, which is one of the reasons I hate networking problems (the other being I know nothing about networking). Can someone lend any advice?
I may return the router and go for a Netgear one, but if I run into the same problem there, my head may explode and spew grey, spongy confetti all over everything.

I'm not sure what the right order would be, but I believe I went router -> modem
I'd try updating the firmware on the router as well, but linksys seems to have a website SNAFU that prevents me from downloading the firmware, which is really quite a reassuring thing for a networking company to have.

Try un-plugging the router and the modem, and turning off the PC thats connected to it. Then power up the modem, let it boot up all the way. Then power up the router. After the routers up and going, turn on the PC. If you don't get connected to the net after it's booted up, try to log into the router and find where it says release and renew and try that. Can you connect without the router?

My modem doesn't have a port to connect without a router, but using my previous wired router I'm connected fine right now. I'm convinced it's either a compatibility or communication issue between the router and modem.
This would be easier if I actually understood some of the things I'm doing of course, but c'est la vie, I suppose

something here doesnt sound right.. i think you may be overlooking some settings. but if you do send it back get a dsl router, or get a real inet connection and go cablemodem.

If I could just work things out with a modem and router in the same package, I'd be endlessly pleased.

Some DSL/cable providers tie your mac address with the IP obtained through DHCP.
Login to your existing router and release your address. Then disconnect it and plug in your new router. If this is the case you should get an IP on your new router.
Alternatively you can change your mac address but I find that to be more broken then the DHCP server thats locking addresses.

Clone your MAC Address. But only after upgrading to better opensource firmware.

problem solved, I cloned the MAC address and then switched the router over to DHCP.
Now of course I need to see about moving things around and/or getting a wireless-G repeater since the room my router has to be in and the room my computer is in are on different stories of the house with a floor, several walls, and a fish tank between them... and the back of my computer (whar zee antennar is) faces away from the signal source so there's that big lump of metal in the way too.

My problems are completely solved. I returned the wireless-G stuff and bit the bullet for Wireless-N... this is good shit, mang
A good strong connection even from 50 feet away with several walls, a fishtank, and an HVAC unit in the way. Worth spending a couple hundred bucks, I guess... no more goddamned 100-foot long ethernet cable strung down the stairs and across a room for people to trip over. I got it nicely secured, too... WEP encryption with a 12 character long alphanumeric passphrase.

WEP can be easily cracked if someone is interested enough...use WPA instead, much stronger encryption...

Supra is right. You should use WPA. If you got a draft N router, then it may support WPA2 which I believe is the strongest available. Not sure if your card would support WPA2, but it should at least support WPA. Play around with the encryption mode as well. Use AES if you can. I've heard of compatibility issues with between some routers and adapters with WPA/AES, so if it doesn't work just use WPA/TKIP.

You were told wrong. WPA is much stronger than WEP. From personal experience, WEP can be cracked in a few minutes.

Alright then, I'll switch over to WPA2 and set up a MAC address whitelist to block unauthorized computers from my network
I've got an up to date linksys adaptor and router, and the firmware looks to be the latest... I know they both support WPA2 and likely AES as well.
