Updated Pics of First Casings...
    #7477718 - 10/02/07 02:53 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

These are the pics I took this morning of my five casings that I've got going right now. For some reason, I didn't take a pic of my other round container. However, the pinset is not that great compared to the others. I think the reason for pinsets in different areas are because I used multi-spore syringes to inoculate my wbs and brf/verm jars. I should be ready to harvest these in a day or so. I'm sure they'll be much bigger tonight when I get home to check them.

I've also got two more casings that I'll be patching tonight and should have some pics of those soon. I'll be spawning my wbs to hpoo tonight for my first monotub! I hope it all goes well. In the next week or so, I am going to start working with agar and isolating some strains to help achieve better pinsets. I'll keep you posted on how everything is going. Thanks to all who have helped me along the way! Let me know what you guys think. Later...

This is 2 B+ cakes crumbled and cased with MGMC, verm, hyd lime, and gypsum

All of these are straight wbs nocked with multi-spore B+ and cased with same material as above

Thanks for all the compliments guys!!!

PinkFloyd... Yes, I am definitely gonna give em some water after the first flush. Actually, I'm gonna fix the aluminum foil to where I can pull it away from the container. Just gonna cut along the top edge of the tray. That way, maybe next time it will latch onto the substrate and if the sub starts to pull/shrink, the alumfoil will go with it.

Vegan... I'll be checking on the potency soon and will let ya know if I notice a difference or not! If I'm not mistaken, those containers are the microwavable ziplock containers with the blue, see-through lids and they are around 6qts, maybe a little less. If you go to WalMart, they come in packs of two. About three inches tall (maybe a little more) and about 12 or so inches long.

NW_Shroomy... All of the casings have the same casing material ingredients. I just made up a huge batch of it and used it on all the casings. I had some leftovers and just chunked it. But, I think this is the recipe I used...

MGMC - 5 cups
Verm - 20% (which = 1cup)
Hyd Lime - 2.5tbs (1/2tbs per cup)
Gypsum - 5% (which = 1/4cup)

I'm pretty sure that's right. So, I just used that recipe to make up one big batch of casing material and just used it until I had all my substrates covered. I tried to keep all my casing levels at about 1/2" to 3/4". Probably closer to 3/4", but def not over that.

Hope this helps! Good luck

I think pulling from the edges occurs as a result of nutrient consumption and is not necessarily indicative of a lack of humidity.  My tub was at 99% RH the entire time and still pulled away from the edges when the first flush was growing.

The wbs in those casings wasn't spawned to anything at all. Just straight wbs cased with my MGMC recipe. I know you can get better results by spawning the wbs to something like hpoo, but don't let anyone tell you that casing straight wbs isn't any good! Obviously it isn't too bad.
