Water heater problem

I bought a nice brand water heater, more than I needed (150w) for my incubator. I set at 80F and everything has been fine at 78. I just checked it when I got back today and it was over friggin 98!!! It is supposed to automatically shutoff at the set temp. The only thing "new" to my incubator is a shitload of clothes and whatever I could find piled all over the back of it between the wall to keep my excess casings warm, which I had no room for inside the incubator. What gives?

Fark. I am wondering if it's not the heat from the casing getting colonized that is responsible for these temps. I felt the bottom of one... it was scorching hot! Man... I hope I didn't just destroy 14 casings, and 14 jars. The casings are TC... which is supposed to withstand heat really well... but the jars are Malabar. Pray for me!

maybe try a bigger incubator? IME, with fishtanks at least, having too big a heater would get the water well over whatever temp the heater was set to shut off at...or u could try removing some of the clothes so as to not hold in quite so much heat
:edit: uhm, actually, after reading it over again...question.....are the clothes IN the incubator or on the outside? of course, you could always turn the dial down on the heater too

It's not a fish tank... I think it's a 40q tub. I removed some of the clothes, and let the lid back some. The temps are leveling out. And turn that frown upside down... the south is awesome!:)

Throw that thing away and colonize at normal room temperature. I haven't used an incubator. . . .ever. They're not necessary and often cause way more harm than good, as you've just found out. RR

If I colonize at room temps, then how am I supposed to drop the temp by 10f or so? that would require me to put my thermostat on 60f!!!

FAE is the main pinning trigger I think? Either way, I fruit and colonize at room temp and it works fine for me as long as humidity is up and there is plenty of FAE goin on

Sorry, I didn't realize you were growing shiitake or one of the other cold weather edibles. Most here are growing cubes which don't require a temperature drop, so I tend to take that for granted. RR

Best advice from my foaf's Canadian cousin is this, don't use risky heaters if you can avoid it. A small space heater can keep a bedroom around 75-80 degrees fairly easily during winter, running not very often if the room is well insulated. Quilts or blankets can keep warmth inside a tub during a nighttime cool down. Stacking tubs conserves heat loss as well.
Truth is, 86 degrees is not necessary if the risks outweigh the advantages, yet to be quantified as far as I know. The overall difference in time frame and yield from room temperature (72 degrees) to ideal (86 degrees) is negligible IMFOAF's Canadian cousin's humble opinion. Mycology=Patience=Nirvana
