well i don't have any pics with me but i can tell you it looks like a spider web with little black dots attached to the ends, these are the spores
cobweb comes in a few variations looking different from substrate to substrate but what i said is the general idea

I have something growing on the cake, I don't think it's contam but it doesn't seem to harm the mycelium and the smell is still mushy. It looks like soft grey mycelium. Could it be dead mycelium? I'll be posting pictures tomorrow.

These are what grew on my cakes, but I have already cut them off. The cake looked okay after cutting them off. What could they be?

Cobweb mold will grow like mad and become very obvious. Cobweb mold is darker than cubensis mycelium... more of a grey than a white. Once you have seen cobweb mold...it is very easy to tell the difference. Regular cubensis mycelium can look an awful lot like cobweb until you know what to look for.
Here is a picture of cobweb mold.

yeah i've seen that before too, i sometimes get something very similar on my cakes, it's like the mycelium dries out and gets stuck it usually looks a little yellow i think it's the equivalent of a scab
i don't believe it's a contam, it's very similar to what i've come across and my cakes did fine
i would say use a flamed knife and fleck it off if you want to reopen the area for mushroom growing and prevent any sort of rotting
if you do this, most would suggest dabbing the exposed area with a generous amount of h202

mould is pretty agressive, spraying with h202 can help but sometimes it just doesnt want to quit.
