It is going to be interesting... he has tapped into a demographic that has never really been involved in politics, thus nobody really knows what is going to happen. Most seasoned political analysts dismiss the Ron Paul following as insignificant, however I'm not so certain (nor am I a seasoned political analyst). As I said, it is going to be interesting...

Unfortunately Ron Paul will have about as much impact this election as Nader did in 2000.

I didn't vote in 2000.. was too lazy.

2004 I voted for Nader... strike that.. i had to WRITE in Nader because John Kerry felt the need to spend millions of dollars of campaign money to wiping Nader off as many state ballots as he could.

RRrrrg... Everything is Ross Perot's fault. If it weren't for his bullshit back in 92 he might have actually won and proved that there's room for people who don't have extreme points of view. My parents are hardcore conservative (the likes of who wanted Pat Buchanan for prez).. and they were actually going to chose Perot over Bush.

If it wasn't for Perot, Bush would have won in '92.

And if it wasn't for Nader, Gore would have run.

Which is more or less the same scenario we face this year...

If that fucking munchkin runs, he's going to suck up a crap-ton of Democratic voters.

Maybe if Democrats didn't suck so bad.. ppl wouldn't have to vote for Nader. Don't blame Nader just because Democrats are just as big a' retards as Republicans and that people vote with their heart.

... and I think Perot would have won if he hadn't pulled out and hopped back in.

I voted for Nader last election because I hated John Kerry... and also because I lived in California at the time and I knew my vote wouldn't really make a difference. And even if it did.. i only hated Kerry slightly less than Bush so I wasn't really tempted to vote for him.

If I lived in Ohio or Florida I might have voted differently.. or if we didn't have this completely ridiculous electoral college then maybe I would have voted for Kerry.

The electoral college is a total joke.

Though it makes an interesting debate topic when people start bitching about rigged voting machines during a presidential election. In the end, it doesn't really matter, as the president is chosen by the electoral college rather than directly by the people.

Do the delagates in the electoral college actually have a choice? Or are they forced to vote for whoever won the state?

How about voting with both? They are not mutually exclusive, y'know.

For the first time in my life (been voting for 18 years), I have changed my party affiliation to Elephant. I can't wait to vote for Dr. No in the primary. It will be the first time I've felt good about pulling the lever in years.

I know the partisan system would have you believe that brain=republican/reason/male and heart=democrat/emotion/female but this is just not true. Things aren't that simple.

If people voted or we organized according to only our brain, we would have a utilitarian society, something that has never, in the history of humanity, been in vogue. For example, if no one used their hearts, mandatory executions to quell population would be on the table in America. It makes sense from a rational perspective (greatest good for whole society) but doesn't make sense from the heart perspective on an instinctual level, and even people who claim to be 100% rational and 0% emotional would agree. Of course there are fringe extremists who argue, from what they claim is a rational perspective (or so they claim) that we should have a utilitarian society or that we should kill all black people so there will be racial order, they don't make it very far in a democratic system.

Likewise things that make sense from a wholly heart perspective are kept in check by the brain. The brain is what keeps people from voting for, say, holidays 365 days a year. Sure it would be fun, but not very practical. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who would support such a notion.

Although I agree it is a lot easier to find people who vote without thinking than people who vote without feeling in America, I'm just saying that most people do vote with both and this is a positive thing in both the personal and the political world. The brain and the heart do a fantastic job of keeping each other in check. It is too bad that the paries don't reflect this.

In my rather limited understanding, a member of the electoral college is under no obligation to cast his vote for the candidate the voters in his state chose. I seem to remember one prominent case where this decided the election, but it was a goodly amount of time ago...

Depends on the state, some states have laws where the electoral college has to cast its vote with the citizens.

there are only a few states that require the elector to vote
with the popular vote...the rest use 'pledges' or other
agreements between the selected elector and their party.

in american history, electors have voted with the popular vote
99% of the time.

48 out of 55 states award electoral votes on a winner-takes-all
basis so if the dem candidate got 50.1 and the repub 49.9, all
votes would go to the democrat...(that's 55 electoral college
votes for california, for example)

http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/faq.html

Reference sources indicate that over the past 200 years, over 700 proposals have been introduced in Congress to reform or eliminate the Electoral College. There have been more proposals for Constitutional amendments on changing the Electoral College than on any other subject. The American Bar Association has criticized the Electoral College as "archaic" and "ambiguous" and its polling showed 69 percent of lawyers favored abolishing it in 1987. But surveys of political scientists have supported continuation of the Electoral College. Public opinion polls have shown Americans favored abolishing it by majorities of 58 percent in 1967; 81 percent in 1968; and 75 percent in 1981.

The number of electoral votes allotted to each State corresponds to the number of Representatives and Senators that each State sends to Congress. The distribution of electoral votes among the States can vary every 10 years depending on the results of the United States Census.

One of the primary functions of the Census is to reapportion the 435 members of the House of Representatives among the States, based on the current population. The reapportionment of the House determines the division of electoral votes among the States. In the Electoral College, each State gets one electoral vote for each of its Representatives in the House, and one electoral vote for each of its two Senators.

Thus, every state has at least 3 electoral votes, because the Constitution grants each State two Senators and at least one Representative. In addition to the 535 electoral votes divided among the States, the District of Columbia has three electoral votes because the 23rd Amendment granted it the same number of votes as the least populated State.

If a State gains or loses a Congressional district, it will also gain or lose an electoral vote. As a result of the Census conducted in 2000, the number of electoral votes allotted to certain States changed for the 2004 election.
