GEORGETOWN -- A top Scott County basketball player was found with cocaine in his shoe and allegedly was delivering it when he was arrested Friday, police said.
According to an arrest report, Jonathan "Bud" Mackey, 18, entered Scott County High School with 1.6 grams of rock cocaine in his shoe.
The rock cocaine was broken into five small pieces, and Mackey told school administrators he was delivering it to an unidentified person, the report said.
Mackey was arrested Friday and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a school and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), first offense.
He was bonded out of jail Saturday morning by the mother of a friend. He will be arraigned Oct. 16.
Mackey was named most valuable player at the Sweet 16 in March when he led Scott County to the state championship.
He declined to comment when reached at his home.
Mackey, a senior, has been suspended initially for 10 days from all school activities and prohibited from entering school grounds, principal Frank Howatt said. The district will review whether Mackey will be expelled.
"We consider this a pretty significant charge," Howatt said.
The news has hit teammates and other students hard, Howatt said.
"People want the best for him," he said. "It's disappointing for them to see him go through this."
Mackey was a leading contender for this year's Mr. Basketball title. He has committed to play at Indiana University.
Indiana officials are going to wait and see what happens with Mackey's charges, Scott basketball coach Billy Hicks said. The university cannot talk about recruits until they sign a national letter of intent, which cannot be done until Nov. 14.
Mackey was found, smelling of marijuana, in the building by school administrators after he did not show up for an English class, Hicks said.
A school resource officer recovered the cocaine on Mackey and then the school called Georgetown police, Howatt said.
Georgetown Police Capt. Scott Starns said he did not know whether anyone else had been arrested in the case.
Hicks said he has been concerned about Mackey over other things, but not about cocaine.
"I've never seen this side of Bud," Hicks said. "Bud has always been a 'yes, sir, no, sir,' just a lovable kid that you always want to put your arm around and hug."
Hicks said he spoke with Mackey at the jail. "You can tell Bud was worried," Hicks said. "You can tell he was really scared."
Hicks said he tried to convey to Mackey the seriousness of the charges.
"He doesn't need to be concerned with basketball or sports," Hicks said. "He needs to be concerned with life."

Why the hell did school officials search his shoes?
Can he get off on illegal search and seizure, if that is the case?

Delivering crack cocaine to a school? I'm pretty certain that if you are within 1000 feet of a school, you no longer have any rights. (sarcasm)

No you pretty much don't have any in high school when it comes to that. I had been fully searched like that twice they checked my pens, shoes, socks, folders, everything and I got a sobriety test both times.
