    #7475347 - 10/01/07 08:17 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

i can figure my way around a computer. for some reason can't get ubuntu to boot, no matter how many ways i have tried. But, i do have a red hat linux disk that will boot.

do i have to download any extras to dual boot before i load this os?

Nope, last I used redhat it really wasn't much harder than Ubuntu from what I remember, should be just as self explanatory. You will probably have a bit more trouble getting things going perfectly after it's installed but I don't remember exactly what you'll need so just post back here when you do. I believe in redhat you'll need to partition the hdd yourself, so just make a root (/) and a swap, and you'll be good. I'd recommend making the swap about a gig or so.

If the Ubuntu disc isint' booting, there's something wrong with the disc or your boot order. Redhat is lame. I'd much rather have slackware or debian or pclinuxos than redhat.

I'm using slackware and it is by far my favorite, but compared to others it can be more difficult to set up, same for Debian last I used it and I've never tried pclinuxos.

I'm told knoppix can be easy to use as well. I personally like Ubuntu. It's Nelson Mandela approved.

I'd go with fedora, before redhat, and ubuntu before both. But it sounds like the ISO was burned improperly or messed up during the process, what program did you use to burn it?

thanx for the install disk supra. i received and got it working excellently.

the only thing that i can't really figure out at this moment, is how to install flash.

i logged in as root admin, moved the appropriate files to their place, but still have yet to get it to work.

are their any tricks that i am not aware of?

add the tr3v1no sources.list to yours, update, and install flash through apt

i don't know what i am doing wrong here. i opened the page when you gave it to me on irc. i could have sworn that i bookmarked it. i guess not though.

anyways, everytime i look up tr3vlno i always get some other language. i can never find an appropriate link off of that through yahoo or google.

is their another word that i can search for.

p.s. i am sorry if it seems like i am being a pain in the ass about this setting up linux issue. i am just confused. /me pulls out hair. i am starting to get it down though. the only thing that i am really going to have to get used to is installing.

p.s.s. is their any way the i can run executable files in linux?

go to google and search for: trevino ubuntu

his site will tell you how to add his sources.list to yours.

installing programs is easier in linux. take your ubuntu linux for example. it use apt like debian. so you can go to command line and:
sudo apt-get install irssi

congrats. you just install irssi. it's that easy. or, you can use synaptic, which i showed you on irc.

you can run any executable files on linux, but understand that executable and .exe arent interchangeable. you cant run a .exe file.

you can run .exe files through wine (windows emulator). Im pretty sure that ubuntu comes with it, but if not, as automan was saying.

in terminal type:

sudo apt-get install wine

now getting whatever .exe you use can be quite a pain, read up some on wine and how to use it, or even wine + whatever.exe, there will probably be a guide to getting it working, i use dvdshrink, dvddecrypter, and ripit4me on ubuntu because of wine.

peace
