Is it possible to leave a colonized cake in a jar for too long? Here's my dilemma... I'm taking a trip in a few weeks and I'd like to start innoculating. I know colonization can vary from strain to strain, conditions, etc. I'm wondering if I inoculate now, will coming back from my trip at the end of the month be too long to leave my jars or if I should wait a few weeks until I know I can be around to observe whats going on. Any advice would be great

It's fine. They can sit fully colonized at room temperature for at least a month without problems. You should always let them sit for a week after full colonization anyway.

No amount of "observing whats going on" will prevent contamination from occurring! I would continue as planned, (being extremely sterile as always), and concentrate on the conditions that you will be leaving them in. I would put them somewhere dark and cooler than normal, (around 72 degrees). That way you effectively controlled the colonization conditions. You slow them up a bit and also slow up contams A-LOT if they are present at all. You can also slow up the colonization times by inoculating with less media, but that might be a bit much. Anyhow, hope this helps. Have a wonderful trip!
