FYFFE—Officers from the DeKalb County Drug Task Force served a warrant in Fyffe on Tuesday afternoon for domestic violence. However, they found more than just the person they were looking for. At approximately 12:45 p.m., the agents arrived to serve the warrant on Brian Chitwood, age 41 of Fyffe at his residence.
“ Knocking on the door, we could hear something going on inside,” explained DTF agent Craig White. “We noticed surveillance cameras and that sort of thing, and nobody was coming to the door.”
According to officers, Chitwood was then observed in the home by DTF Deputy Director Jeff Bain, and then entry to the house was made. Officers entered the home from both the front and rear entrances.
“Brian Chitwood was taken into custody, or detained, as was Billy Townsel,” said White. “In plain view in the back were chemicals known to manufacture methamphetamine.”
Officers then obtained consent to search Chitwood’s home. Chitwood cooperated with officers to the point that he told them where to find some of the finished methamphetamine. Approximately 6 to 8 grams was found in the house with an estimated street value of $600 to $800 dollars— $100 per gram. According to White, it was unknown whether or not Chitwood was making the meth for sale. Also found was a small amount of marijuana, as well as all the chemicals necessary to make more methamphetamine.
At that point, Chitwood was officially arrested and was charged with Unlawful Manufacturing First Degree, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of a Controlled Substance. Billy Townsel was charged with Manufacturing First Degree.
DeKalb County deputies were also on scene, as well as Under-Sheriff Ron Ogletree. As White and Ogletree spoke to the press, the sound of officers smashing glass containers which once held meth and meth byproducts could be heard in the background. The Shiloh Fire Department also responded to assist with cleanup of the site. White and the other agents weren’t strangers to the Chitwood residence.
“This is not the first time we've been to this house. About two years ago we came to this house and seized another lab; but he wasn't charged the first time we were here, because he was not here,” said White. “We just couldn't charge him with it because we couldn't put him here.”
White stated that the Chitwood bust was considered a large bust, relatively speaking. “Relative to other drug busts, he would be considered a large cook; not the largest, but a large cook. This is based over time,” said White.
As to why anyone would keep all the residue and byproducts lying around when it might be used as evidence against them, White explained that meth cooks reuse that residue over and over again.
Chitwood and Townsel were transported to the DeKalb County jail where they were booked and were awaiting a bond hearing.

Tweakers and their illusory security measures like surveillance cameras. He was running a lab in a residence all ready on the radar for methamphetamine. I hope the next 130 months in prison are enjoyable.

If he's only manufacturing it for his personal use then there's no problem here. They should charge him if he isn't getting rid of the byproducts properly (flushing them, burying them, etc).

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. Compared to some more heinous crimes the sentencing for methamphetamine manufacture seems zealous.
