My first exposure to reggae was through the Bad Brains, a punk rock group who would do reggae tunes along with their hardcore punk stuff. I would usually skip these reggae tracks, so I could 'get to the good stuff'.
Then of course there was Bob Marley, who I was exposed to in high school, when I would hang out with fellow stoners. Also Sublime.
And that's where it stayed for me for a long time. I thought of reggae as Bob Marley and Sublime, not knowing that there was a rich lexicon of reggae artists out there waiting to be discovered by me.
Then, many years later, well into my 20's I got this job at a smoke shop, and my boss was a guy that was a huge reggae fan. We had satellite radio at the shop, and he always kept it tuned to the reggae station.
At first I thought it was gay as hell, and I could hardly ever wait for this guy to leave so I could change the station to punk rock. But eventually, the music started to grow on me, and I started picking out artists that I like such as:
Eek a mouse Black Uhuru Lee 'Scratch' Perry Dennis Brown Carlton Livingston Max Romeo and the Upsetters Toots and the Maytals Third World Shinehead Willie Williams Israel Vibration Pete Tosh
etc...
Now I have a decent reggae collection and I really like the music, mainly because it is upbeat and very chill, yet still anti-establishment. You can only take so much punk nihilism before it starts to depress you. So these days, whenever I'm stressed out, I find that loading a bowl and throwing some reggae music on the stereo is a great way to unwind.
And so, I leave you with one of my favorite reggae tracks: Ganja Smuggling by EekAMouse
Enjoy!

You might like Pepper. They are kind of a punk reggae mix and they sound similar to sublime. I saw them at warped tour and they fuckin rocked!
