Drug dealers have been warned they will be targeted again and again as police bid to rid an estate of troublemakers. Operation Dedham saw properties raided in a week-long campaign to put a stop to the use and sale of illegal substances on Seaham's Deneside estate.
Some residents say lawlessness has forced people to move out of the area, now police have launched the crackdown in response to information from bobbies and a call for action from remaining locals and councillors.
A 22-strong team of officers also joined forces with agencies including the DVLA and education welfare officers to carry out sweeps. Results are still being pulled together after a weekend of police activity.
However, the first five days the operation saw: • a rifle discovered in a house; • drugs including cannabis and cocaine seized; • pirated DVD movies recovered; • 12 cars taken off the street for out-of-date tax discs; • 16 motorists issued with £80 tickets for tax discs which had recently expired; • suspected stolen bikes and a mini-moto reclaimed; • 18 children stopped by truancy officers for being out of school; • a man and woman arrested on warrants for failing to attend court; • two men arrested for failing to pay court fines; • a man arrested for driving whilst disqualified and another for shoplifting; • a biker arrested for harassing council street wardens; • a man arrested on suspicion of possessing criminal property and live ammunition.
Police targeted Ryton Crescent in most of the raids, but also carried out strikes in the Westlea and Milldale area of Seaham and two addresses in Horden.
Durham Constabulary's off-road bike unit was also drafted in during Saturday and Sunday to deal with moto-menaces in Eastlea.
Sergeant Gary Webb, of Seaham Police, said: "Police, councillors and local residents had concerns for several weeks that there were criminal activities going on, drug dealing, stolen property and antisocial behaviour in the area.
"It's worth doing because we have made some good contacts in the area, got lines of inquiry and intelligence and we are showing people were are going to deal with these sorts of crime.
"It will continue and it has been a success."
Anyone with information to pass on to police regarding drugs offences and antisocial behaviour can contact Durham Constabulary on 0845 60 60 365 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Completely misses the point. These criminals exist because the drugs are lucrative. All this will do is shift the problem to someplace else.

If the going price for peanuts suddenly became $2000 an LB you would see a large increase of peanut production. Eventually the supply would even out to the demand and prices would go down. However, since drugs are illegal there will always be a risk and the demand will always be greater then the supply, making the sellers real rich and the buyers real broke.
Arresting the peanut eaters and growers isn't going to work, there will always be profit potential and people trying to get it.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility: For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears." - Kahlil Gibran

Foolish. Chances are those citizens that are helping them will be found out by whoever's running the show and killed.
