75% of people arrested in Darwin are Stoned

Three from four people arrested in Darwin 'are on drugs'

Quote:

THREE out of four people arrested and detained by police in Darwin are under the influence of illicit drugs, research shows.

Australian Institute of Criminology data reveals 73 per cent of Darwin detainees tested positive to cannabis in July and August, steadily increasing from 46 per cent in January last year.
Another 8 per cent tested positive to methylamphetamine, the drug commonly known as speed.

The data, compiled under the AIC's Drug Use Monitoring in Australia program (DUMA), shows a steady increase in the number of offenders testing positive to cannabis.

Drug Free Australia executive officer Jo Baxter said there was a common misconception that cannabis was a "soft" drug.

"Research now shows just how complex and dangerous this drug is," she said.

She said Australian Governments needed to be tougher on illicit drugs.

"Then, and only then, will we begin to get the results similar to those countries that have been successful reducing illicit drug use," she said.

But NT police say alcohol is a far bigger problem than any illicit drug when it comes to crime.

Officer-in-charge of the NT Police Drug and Alcohol policy unit Sgt Scott Mitchell said the statistics for cannabis use among Darwin offenders were not significantly different to the rest of Australia, but they were for alcohol.

Our cannabis figures aren't alarming (by comparison) but there's a significant difference in the alcohol figures," Sgt Mitchell said.

DUMA statistics also showed 83 per cent of female offenders and 82 per cent of male offenders had reported heavy alcohol use at some time in the 30 days before their offence.

This figure was far higher than anywhere else in the country.

"It's that really high level of drinking and offending that's the problem," said Sgt Mitchell.

"People when they get drunk do dumb things. They get into cars and drive. We know they shot someone because they looked at their girlfriend.

"Cannabis users, by and large, are fairly mellow."

No, 73% of Darwin detainees tested positive for cannabis metabolites which can last up to a month, or longer, in the body. This does not mean the person being tested is currently under the influence of cannabis.

> "Research now shows just how complex and dangerous this drug is," she said.

Riiigggggtttttt.... please show me the studies that show cannabis is dangerous.

> She (Drug Free Australia executive officer Jo Baxter) said Australian Governments needed to be tougher on illicit drugs. "Then, and only then, will we begin to get the results similar to those countries that have been successful reducing illicit drug use," she said.

Riiigggggtttttt.... please show me the countries that have been successful in the war on drugs.

And what do the cops have to say about all this?

> "It's that really high level of drinking and offending that's the problem," said Sgt Mitchell.... "Cannabis users, by and large, are fairly mellow."

Bush's visit to Australia really highlights what a fucked up facist state it's turning into.

Come on, it was founded on people that wouldn't fit into normal society. Where's the violent revolution? Are the Australians brainwashed into apathy watching telly and swilling larger? Where are the revolutions? Why do people keep letting the jackboot stamp on their face?

I wonder if Anandamide would trigger a false positive.

Further information on Anadamide

It certainly feels a bit that way at the moment.
Our PM is so far up Bush's ass it feels like we are becoming the 51st state. Public opinion is changing and John Howard will be thrown out at the next election hopefully then we can move away from following America's lead and return to being Australian!

The reaction from the cops does give you a bit of an insight into what most of us feel like about drugs

I often go to bush doofs (outdoor raves in the bush) and always speak to the cops if they are there, generally they prefer policing raves and dance parties cos they realize that people on drugs are nowhere near as destructive and harmful as those that are drunk!
Its the damn politicians that make the laws they don't really want to enforce.

It's more likely the UK will become the 51st state. Something I wouldn't mind if Americant ever legalises it (Might happen). Too bad there's no LEAP here or over there for you. What's the point in police enforcing laws they don't agree with? It wastes their time, and wastes yours.

it wouldn't because drug tests look for thc metabolites not thc itself. also anandamide breaks down quickly in the body.
