Agar culture: Bluing sector
    #7472267 - 09/30/07 10:27 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Let's assume one has a petri of agar with several recognizable sectors growing on it. All of the sectors but one are white, while the one in question is light blue. All are experiencing the same environmental factors, etc, so what could be deduce about the blue sector? What would cause one sector to be blue and not the others? The only thoughts I could come up with were that a)this sector is a wussy substrain and is being bruised or otherwise upset just by existing, or b)this substrain is particularly potent. Do either of these make sense? I've never been able to gather for sure whether mushrooms with more psilocybin to begin with are truly more prone to blueing or not... any thoughts?

Contrary to popular belief, bluing is not a sign of potency. Each sector is it's own organism, so the genetics are slightly different. Some substrains blue more than others. Good luck.

I've seen this myself quite often and initially I thought it was a sign of a potent substrain but now I consider it an undesirable trait. Since normal bluing generally happens with damage that causes psilocin to oxidize it seems logical to assume that something is stressing the mycelium to the point that the psilocin is oxidizing. This would point to a weaker strain that can't handle the petri dish environment. But this is only a guess.
