my modest setup
    #7472159 - 09/30/07 11:57 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I got a little fluoro and am using a halogen flood light for heat for now. Here's my mangy sally, 3 tiny white sage seedlings in the back, coffee, the plastic bin contains a dozen pedro seedlings and the coathanger/plastic bag greenhouse contains my sally cuttings. I'm thinking of throwing a compact flouro bulb in a lamp on the shadier side to help out a bit. Any recommendations to improve this little setup? I'm glad to finally have this happening now that winter is well on it's way! I think this might just give the sally the boost she needs.

Doing nicely for a 'modest' setup... my winter project is a lot more modest than that, consisting of 1 standard-sized south-facing window, lol. Diminishing the size of the garden for winter is never fun, thus I can only keep a select few plants... I look foward to the day when I've got my own full-size solar-windpowered greenhouse!! Ahh, the happiness that will prevail! :-D Good luck growing man. The psychotria looks NICE! Never had luck with it myself.

I didn't germinate it, I just got it at a store as a house plant. They're pretty easy to find, at least around here and I assume elsewhere as well. If you are really into germinating them yourself, I wish you luck.

You're probably adding too much water to the soil if you're getting mold with the coffee seeds. I've had some experience and found this to be the cause of most of my failures.

If you want to improve your setup without much hassle get some four- foot flouro fixtures and either hang them over the plants or put the ends on something like two chairs to create a chamber. At the very least, line the back wall with aluminum foil dull side out to reflect light back to the plants. you may want to do the other three sides whil eyou're at it...even if you just hang it down, it will help a little.
