I've never hunted before, but I'd like to find some wild edibles. I'm going to do sporeprints and high detail macrophotography of them when I find them for better identification, but first I need to know what to keep a lookout for, and where to look.
I'll be all over oregon and washington, specifically the coast.

Chanterelles should be the easiest to find, they're pretty prolific in the west of both states. You can also look for hedgehogs Hydnum umbilicatum and king boletus, both of which I've found under sitka spruce. Libs should be going right now or soon so check some grazed pastures. Not sure if the other actives are popping.

Keep your eyes peeled for chanterelles, boletes, hedgehogs, matsutake, oysters, shaggy manes, shaggy parasols, king stropharia, prince agaricus, honeys, to name a few; edible amanitas if you are up to the challenge and of course the actives including cyans, libs, azures and a couple others if that is your cup of tea... Rest assured if you are here in mid to late October there will be no shortage of fungus for you to drool over. Coast region is probably the most diverse. Check out the riparian zones near river estuaries and sand spits for edibles and actives. Be sure to take a walk into some coastal rainforests for the most choice edibles!

Nice. I bought two mushroom fieldguides, they should help me out somewhat along the way.
