Existentialism and the Psychonaut
    #7469635 - 09/30/07 11:27 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Does the idea of a Psychonaut fit into existential thought? Would the "serious" use of psychedelics be understood? Sartre denied the unconscious and claimed that it was an excuse we used to limit our choice and responsibility for our lives. So, would a hardcore existentialist see the use of psychedelics for personal/mental/spiritual gain as backwards and unproductive? Sartre's rejection of the noumenon tells us again that perhaps psychedelics do not fit into this philosophy. What do you think?

It seems people may not understand existentialism and Sartre well enough. Care to elaborate?

I don't see how it could possibly be a problem to fit psychedelics and existentialism together... There's no contradiction between developing one's selfhood and taking psychedelic drugs. There may be a conflict in the role you place on them. Don't forget that many existentialists were basically mystics (Kierkegaard, later Heidegger, etc.)

I think Sartre would be down with psychedelics. Sartre believed that fundamentally we are all absolute freedom. We are not constrained in any way and there is nothing that can define us. That's why he hated psychology that said that you are the way you are because all your past history. He believed that we could choose to define ourselves and become whatever we want at anytime because fundamentally we are nothing but freedom. As for the psychedelic experience I think ego death is synonymous with Sartre's idea of absolute freedom. With psychedelics we can realize completely what Sartre deduced only theoretically.

Really, the fundamental, ultimate mystery -- the only thing you need to know to understand the deepest metaphysical secrets -- is this: that for every outside there is an inside and for every inside there is an outside, and although they are different, they go together. - Alan Watts
