I think this might be a neat idea...

Hey there...while I was fretting over my soggy cakes:), I thought of something that might be kinda useful. I notice that, when you do a double ended casing (or if you just dont clean off the vermiculite layer off your cake when you birth it), I get a nice, large pinset from the vermiculite layer.
This whole batch came from 4oz Kerr Quilted Jelly jars (had them, so I used them - they colonize wicked fast, too!)
Now, the 4oz Kerr cake is slightly smaller than a standard 1/2pint cake, right? So what if you:

- colonized a batch of 4oz kerr jar cakes
- got out your trusy 1/2 pint jars (properly sterilized, of course)
- threw a small amout of moist vermiculite (or better casing mix) in the bottom of the 1/2 pint jar
- gently placed the kerr cake in (same orientation as the jar - upside down)
- and then filled in around the cake with more casing mix, until it was completely 'encapsulated'
-now back to the incubator for a couple more days
- re-birth, and wait for a massive pin explosion!!!:)

Do you guys think the idea has any merit?

I think I may try it out on my next batch of jars, Ill call it "Zesty's Encapsulated Cased Cake Casing Tek":)

The cakes would have to be treated like casings, in this case, right? Which means lower RH...still though, would you get more pins, or does it defeat the whole idea of casings providing more surface area for pinning. But, then again, if it did function as a casing, the substrate layer would be quite thick, which could produce some nice looking shrooms...

Or maybe I could just go to bed, seeing how its 6am and all:)

If you're gonna go through all that, why not add some brf to the v and let the whole thing colonize...

Wait a minute... that'd be the same as a 1/2 pint jar... Duh!

Your best idea was to go to bed!
