Problem with PSU
    #7467756 - 09/29/07 05:01 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

My PSU has started making a really unhealthy sound. Sounds like the fan inside it is having trouble spinning. If I give it a good whack it'll stop, but only until the next time I turn the computer on. Is it just a simple case of it needing a clean?

Or something far more... sinister :ooo:

Hard to say. But you don't really want your PSU dying on you when you least expect it. Is it a cheap one?

Don't know what kind of system you have, but if its a regular joe system, you can get a nice Thermaltake 430w for like $30 bucks. It's dual fan, and built solid.

Here's the official page. Search for a deal on newegg or somesuch.

Sounds like it could be a battery or possibly dust, how long have you had the system and how new is it?

RuNE: It's pretty cheap I'd say. Came already built into the case.

Aaron: I think I've had it for around 3 years now.

I think I'll just open it up and take a look.

Be careful doing that. I got a nice zap out of a capacitor that was still charged. I find it's much easier to just buy a new PSU than replace the fans.

just rip the old fan out, and use double sided tape and put a new fan on the outside.

You can have my old one. Just remind me when you next see me. 450w, nothing fancy.
