idea for "ethno mod raffle" planning stages
#7466749 - 09/29/07 09:26 AM (16 years, 4 months ago) |

OK so i have an idea for a ethno mod raffle, i got the idea from a motorcycle web site i belong to and it is a really good idea.
the way it works is i pick an item from a vendor and get a quote
so say i/we pick a 2, 18 inch cuttings from XXXXX which i know a place that has free shipping , so the cost of both the cuttings would be 32 dollars. <- ex
now i would make the ethno mod raffle thread and post that the first 32 people that would like to enter please post in the mod raffle thread.
so 32 people "enter" and i give 2 weeks for those 32 people to send 1 dollar to my safe PO box via mail.
that 1 dollar is your donation toward buying the prize
now we will come up with a system to pick names, like i will list them all on paper, 1-32 with names next to the numbers and i will send it to nailm so he sees it to, then i will ask a random member to pick a number on public forum. the person who's name is next to that number will win the prize .
now if you win, you only paid 1 dollar for 2 sweet cuttings or what ever the prize is and if you loose it is only a dollar.
now if there are any additional fees that i dont list in the initial raffle thread then i will take responsibility for them.
what do you guys think?

the only issue i can see is the cost of international shipping, easy to work with US vendors & US members... but we all know that u will get worldwide entries.... i take it that phytosanitory certs wouldnt be included, so any international shipping would be at the winners risk?
either way, im still game

it would probably be best if u held a separate comp for different continents and choose a prize within that continent... like one for america, one for europe for example... u would have to do that for the aussies anyway, or disclude them, seen as their import rules are so strict... maybe u could hold an american raffle, nalim hold the european one... that way shipping costs could be calculated and included in the raffle price i guess...
asian/african users, dont cry, im just using US & europe as an example
sounds like it could get quite messy and costly, if for example it was a US vendor and european winner of a fairly heavy item... id hate to see u get lumped with a big shipping bill royer...
good idea but definately needs more thought putting into it

I think that a separate prize depending on location is probably the best way to go. One would just need to make sure the prices of the prizes( ) are the same.

shipping continents is the only problem i see also.
aus is very rude about importing
also, it would be neat to have nalim run the UK comp and you run the CAN/US comp.
splitting these up would be a major step.
i would like to see this in action some time, dont know if i would be able to contribute for a while though.
what about a, 1$ raffle or "prize donation" options? like, you pay 1$ and together everyone buys 2 cacti, but 2nd place gets a cacti cut from mysterman#1 and 3rd place gets a handful of HBWR from mysterman#2 etc first place would always exist but 2nd and 3rd are dependent upon prize donations from members?
it would be even cooler if there were some free auctions, from the donated prizes, the donator would provide pics, pick how many can enter, and ships to whoever wins.
it could be an alternative to putting up a contest in the mktplc, especially for those with donations like huge cacti, mature plants, bulk cuttings or seeds etc. i sometimes have trouble coming up with contest ideas, i see this as a good way of giving things away also.

perhaps the prize shouldnt be decided on until a winner is chosen... for example: the raffle would be for $30 worth of wotever ethno stuff the winner desires?

yep a bunch of these idea sound good, one problem we are running in to is if it is a raffle it would have to go through the lotto board but if i made it a free raffle with donations excepted then it would work, but that means people can enter for free and dont have to donate nothing (the one dollar to help pay for it) then i would have to pay if we get cheapskate members, then it would be shut down quicker than it started.
so i will do lots of thinking to try to get around this bump.
now as far as second and third, i dont think we will get enough donations for it, there are not that many members that are in the garden to get loads of prizes BUT the free stuff that members give away like cpt, myself and many other give away in the marketplace, could go toward second, third etc.
as far as prizes, i the idea of waiting to pick the prize until you win would b the best idea because i know of vendors in Aussie,EU Netherlands,Thailand,Taiwan, well just about everywhere so it would not be a problem having something dropped shipped to the location.
i am going to go rack my brain and read up on raffles and see what i can do :-))

no it would b fine even to you in Aussie, i know a few very good ethno vendors in Aussie, to tell you the truth i dont know why people in Aussie have such a hard time finding specimens, some of the best and most desirable specimens i have seen come out of Aussie
but back to the statement you made, it would not be hard at all i have people that i have traded with everywhere that would help if i asked and they know that i am a good trader/good person

damn that sounds great! i am down. if you need anyone to send stuff out in asia, let me know
the only problem i see is things like cacti are not just plants but cites...so a clear warning "beware" would be good...cause the cost and time for cites will kill the idea. just my thought, great idea...i think you will be able to get it to work!

this sounds like a great idea. I would be willing to donate a small amount to get it off the ground and running. I think we should stick to live plants mainly and combinations of seeds for smaller contests (seeds are generally pretty cheap).
As for getting around the lotto problem. Lets just start a 'club' everytime there is a drawing. So for example maybe the first one would be a 'columnar cacti club' which you have to pay a members fee to be a part of. Once the maximum membership is reached, one lucky club member is given some cacti payed for by the club fees. This way its not technically a 'lotto'. So then the next time through we could have something else like 'kratom cutting club' or something.
we should probably come up with a list of vendors to work with? **edited by JSlice for 'pornographic' content' *** others....
~JSlice~
***edit note: sorry for listing non shroomery vendors, but i promise everyone on my list were shroomery vendors in the past. I didnt realize how many decent vendors we have lost??

the prizes dont have to be from shroomery sponsors. its just a rule that we are not allowed to post names of non shroomery sponsors on the forums... please read the rules!

'read the rules'? ive been here along long time. I know the rules. In fact we have gone through many different sets of rules in this forum since i have been here. The reason i posted that list is to make a point. If this is raffle is going to happen, we at some point will have to discuss where the plants are coming from, which is not allowed.

like i said in my first reply: u were breaking the rules by posting names of non shroomery sponsors. theres no need to get so butt hurt about it. i was just telling u before a mod came and edited your post.
royer already stated that he knows vendors on every continent that can probably supply prizes, and it seems as if it was already decided that prizes of a certain value would be chosen by the winner after the winner was chosen. that way the winner gets exactly wot they desire. also it negates the need to have 10 different contests for 10 different types of ethnobotaical. it negates the need to consider different legal policies of different countries. it also vastly reduces the possibility of the mods being lumped with a big shipping bill, not to mention gets rid of the phytosanitory certification issues. it can all be done in a single raffle, that is easy to manage, opens the raffle to everyone from every country on the boards, and its much less of a headache for the mods concerned. so no need to discuss prizes or vendors publically at all.
now stop derailing this thread.

to eliminate the problem with overseas winners, just don't buy the item beforehand.. that way even if the person live in the us/canada... you just pay for the item with the 'donations' and then have the shipping address as the winner's. if they are overseas, just paypal them the 32$

u missed the point too... no matter where people are, america, canada, europe, australia, asia, wherever, there will be a vendor to supply within the country/continent that the winner resides in... the winner will not recieve any money, they will recieve something ethnobotanical of their choice provided by a vendor as close as possible to them... (if that is how it is decided that the raffle should work of course)
